W Marsden Turf Accountants was located at 164 Inkerman Street, which was almost next door to pickfords shop and just short of the Railway Club. I lived quite close to this location and I have no memory of a bookies shop. As we didn't move to Inkerman Street from Francis Street until 1963 I had to consult the trade directory's and as bookie shops didn't become legal in the UK until 1961 the first entry I found was in the 1962 directory. There is also an entry in the 1963 directory, but as there are no further entries right up until the road was demolished in 1971 I have to assume that the shop closed in 1963.
Phil died in 2020. RIP.
