Who knows more about the Band of Hope and where it ran from in Nechells? What was it?

I understand that the Band of Hope were a temperance union which obviously were against the drinking of alcohol in any form. There were a lot about in the early 20 century, but lets face it was the water safe to drink? Even if it was I'm sure that beer tasted much better.

I have been unable to make any posts for a while due to different reasons, but it is good to see the site still alive and running.I would like to test a few peoples memories, did any one go to st.Matthews school in lupin street I was there from 1943 to 48 the head teacher was Miss Morgan with top teacher being  Mr Southgate [fond of the slipper on your backside].Does any one know when it closed. I was born in the back to backs in Proctor street by the gas works in Lord st. Did any of the forum members live there or thereabouts.Sorry it is bit disjointed.

Hi Mick,
The school was Lupin St Junior school. I was there around 1949, was in love with my teacher Miss Jefreys, Mr Southgate became Headmaster. Then went onto Loxton Street, was Milk Monitor, which I blame for my high cholestrol. Lived in Willis Street next to the coal yard, then Freemans Road. Anyone remeber the Mann family. Came to Sydney Australia 1968, have been back many times, always visit Nechells etc.

Hi Mannpro1

Welcome to you, I lived around the corner from you in Francis Street until it was demolished, when the family moved to Inkerman Street in Vauxhall. I only went to school in Nechells for a couple of years before I couldn't take St Vincents school any longer and I finished my schooling in Balsall Heath.

I remember the coal yard very well and was usually there every Saturday morning earning a few pennies fetching coal for neighbours. Always tried to have my own barrow because those steel wheeled ones you could borrow were impossible to push. Well at least for a 4 stone 4 foot 6 inch weakling as I was then, they were.

Hi Whitty,
If my memory is correct it was owned by the Taroni's, but the bikes were sold up the street a bit, where they had a yard which sold and stored many things including bikes and buiding materials. On the other side of our house was the Chapel and the Scouts Hall.

Hi Mannpro1

What sort of timescale are we talking about, because in the mid 50's the coalyard was owned by William Rogers.

I acknowledge Bill Rogers ownership, but my thoughts were the Taroni's until early to mid fifties, when they staarted into other businesses. ??
