I moved into Melvina Road, it must have been 1953 or 1954 as my brother was born in the flat that we moved into,Christmas Day 1954. I can remember playing on what we used to call the bombed building at the bottom of the road. My sister and I went to Loxton Street school a very austere school, we both hated it. We too used to sit on the wall outside of the flats watching the trains go by and we watched the very first diesel train go past, such an exciting time to us. Mr, McNab the ice cream man on his bike. The milkman with his horse and cart, such beautiful times, safe to play and go around without fear. We used to walk up to watch the trains over the bridge and see them being turned on a big turntable there. I was only 9 when we left, but can remember it all vividly. Times when children really could be children and go and play safely.
