As Tramp suggested, here's a bit about me, as I am a "newbie".

I'm not retired (yet), but wish I was! Still got another 25 years of hard slog to go!!

My interest is in the Walsall Picture House (Bridge Street), also called the Gaumont.
I am involved with the fund-raising and restoration of England's oldest Wurlitzer theatre organ.
The Walsall Picture House was where it was installed. It would be good to know a bit about the history,
get some photos etc etc.
I have already written a small book on the history of the organ, but don't have much about the cinema.

If anyone can help, I would be really grateful.

The little picture that was posted - I can hardly see it!! Is there a bigger one available?

Best Wishes,
Glen

I went on Google and picked this up in about thirty seconds, you are pretty safe from copyright worries with postcards pre 1960.
So I am led to believe.

Hi Phil,

What did you use as your search words? I've tried everything I can think of, but nothing!!

is the Pic house the stripey building on the left by any chance - it looks as though it may be a cinema. Or the building on the right wih the arches?

Thanks for your help,
Glen

Oooh I just loved looking at the cinema photos .......the Piccadilly in Sparkhill and the Sheldon in particular.

My parents actually met at the Sheldon cinema and also used to go the Adelphi on the Coventry Road, which they nicknamed 'The Unhealthy'.

Does anyone remember the Olton cinema (next door to what used to be the Golden Arrow pub) .
and also  'The Tivoli' at the Swan? I went there on my very first every cinema trip when I was about 4.

I think I have already posted The Sheldon. Here are the other three you mention.

The Tivoli, The Olton and The Adelphi.

Glen,

Thanks for replying so openly and welcome again.  Your organ project and the details of its location is just the kind of thing the country needs to retain the best of its past.  O0

Good Luck, tramp
