The season of Christmas has inspired great literature and great visual art, but also great music.

At lunchtime on Friday 23rd December, St Martin in the Bull Ring will echo to some of that great music performed by the Sutton Coldfield Chamber Choir and the Bournville Strings. Music to stir the soul and put everyone into the true Christmas Spirit.

There will, of course, be Carols sung by the choir and by the audience including two new carols that were premiered by the CBSC only last year. One of these is 'Christmas is coming' by Rebecca Davies - the 9-year old winner of the carol competition sponsored by CBSO/BBC Midlands Today. And the other a jazzy new setting of ‘The First Nowell’ conducted by the composer.

The programme will include ‘Winter’ from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, music for oboe and violin by J S Bach, as well as his well known Jesu, joy of man’s desiring, and some Christmas Spirituals, which have been specially arranged for this concert.

The concert, which begins at 12:30 and will last for an hour, is free – but there will be a retiring collection for St Basils, Birmingham’s premier charity working with young people who are homeless or at risk. Blair Kesseler, head of Fundraising at St Basils said, “ At this time of year, as Christians recall the story of a homeless young girl looking for somewhere safe to give birth to her special child, I can think of nothing better than to share great music  and raise money to make Christmas a little better for some of Birmingham’s young people in need.”
