Upper Highgate Street
« on: October 03, 2006, 12:30:11 AM »
Although i was not born in this area i know many stories from my mom and gran who lived there until after the second world war.

Gran who is now long gone ran a drapers [clothes] shop in Upper Highgate Street. She also did a few side lines like a lending library and a loan facility.

Her mother collected the weekly repayments for the loans which would have been fine if she did not have to pass a number of pubs on the way home. Result? She returned and fell flat on her face up the shop step. :P

I used to live at 7back of 11 Upper highgate Street until moving to Tamworth in 1962 at the age of 7.used to help out at a paint yard opposite our entry. Then spent the few coppers in the corner shop.l remember we used to play on what we called the bombed buildings. The only neighbours name l recall is the Duckhouse family.Does any one out there have any old photos.

Hi Philip Welcome to the forum, try typing Upper Highgate St in the search box at the top right of the page. It will bring up any photos and posts we have about the street. I don't think this one is among them as I had a quick look.
Phil died in 2020. RIP.
