MOTHERS. The Movie

Hi,

My name is Larry and I'm a West Midlands based screenwriter - and my secret ambition is to bring Mothers to the big screen! The world needs to know the part Mothers played in rock n'roll history.
I didn't ever go myself - too young and not local enough - but I first heard about it a year or so ago and, fascinated, started digging around. This led me to Kevin Duffy and his book - and an invitation to attend the Mothers Reunion on Sat 21st (which was excellent BTW).
I met a few 'faces' there and am in contact with them - but would love to hear from more people. More specifically, I would love to talk to people involved in the running of the club. I will need lots of 'members' stories later - but for the time being I'm looking for a information about how it worked, the story of it's beginning and, sadly, it's ending.
Because whilst the facts (and the gig list) speak for themselves - a film needs a story - a backbone to 'hang' these facts on. Sometimes this involves a 'fictional' central character, ideally it's based on a real person.
Inevitably there is always a slight 'Hollywood-isation' of things - but by keeping this a British film, with British money behind it, we can keep it real.
So - if you think you can help, get in touch. I can be reached by email through this message board, or you can reply directly here.
Thanks for reading and see you at the Oscars(!!!!)

Yeah, I remember Erskine T from the Diskery. A guy called Rod took over then I did it for a few weeks.
I have original photos that were reproduced for the cover of the book. I will have to check out the passages you wrote.
People I mainly hung around with there were Plod, Bernie, Warwick, Ken Weeks, Rick, Phil, etc etc.
Were you lucky enough to see Spirit when they performed there? One of the best live bands ever.

So the verdict is out..Zeppelin did NOT steal the theme of 'Stairway to Heaven' from Spirit. But one of the interesting snippets in the newspaper reports was this

A witness for Wolfe’s (i.e. Randy California) estate testified about seeing Plant attend a Spirit gig and socialise with the US group at Mother’s, a Birmingham club, during its visit to England 1970. The singer shrugged that off. “I really don’t recall any of the bands I saw there or everyone I ever hung out with.”

Did anyone see Plant at the Spirit gig? I didn't but then I hardly ever spotted anyone famous in the audience.

Hi Larry. You should have a look through the thread (Clubs of the 60's and 70's) I am sure you will find something on there about Mothers.
Was it a vision, or a waking dream?

Just in case anyone is looking at this topic, note that tomorrow, March 5th 2018, BBC1's Inside Out programme is showing an interview with me, Rob Moore - another Mothers regular - and Jez Collins, Birmingham music historian. It's just coming up to 50 years since Mothers first opened up and BBC Midlands decided to do a feature, recording it at Mothers. The carpet shop is now a Polish foods shop and the owners were kind enough to let us in upstairs for the interview. Photos here looking towards where the stage was and the Blue Plaque.Broadcast time is 7.30pm..note that you'll only see this in the BBC Midlands region though I guess you could see it on BBC iPlayer in any region from 24 hours later.

first time I've seen the blue plaque - forgotten the 50th anniversary is up, can't believe it!!
spoke to Dave "Clem" Clemson recently (ex Bakerloo, Colosseum, Humble Pie) from Lichfield/Tamworth and he fondly remembers Mothers and also bumped into a bloke at the 100 club in London who mentioned he was at college in Gloucester and him and his mates used to drive up to gigs whenever they could - without a nominated driver !! Whilst at the London blues week in Jan saw a roadie with a Mothers Tee Shirt on! I don't remember any merch at the time?
Anyway, off to iplayer to see if I can pick up this programme.

I never knew of any Mothers merchandise either.
But I did think about scanning the Mothers 'logo' from my membership card, enlarging it and printing onto one of those iron-on Tshirt transfer papers and wearing it to the BBC interview, but my cards were too creased to use..a bit small too and they came out very pixellated. I'd need a much larger source to scan.
