Hi Cliff
Nice to see you have returned, Hope you stay with us. Yes mate Mothers was previously known as The Carlton Club. When it changed to Mothers it became a very important place. Many of the bands that played there were playing a different kind of music, experiencing a different kind of culture. That music couln't be heard on most radio shows. The only guy on th BBC playing 'our' kind of music was John Peel' who appeared a Mothers on a regular basis.
The importance of this kind of club in it's day playing Blues, Progressive, Underground and Rock music charted the path nationally and also globally for the kind of music and musicians that most of us enjoy today. That is why Mothers is such a well known name, and a well known story.
It wasn't a night club in the normal sense of the word, it was a mecca for good (and not so good) people to come and play their kind of music. Without Mothers the likes of Marc Bolan, Fairport Convention, Deep Purple and many bands who are actually around today 40 years on would have have struggled to survive. Mothers in fact has greatly been credited with helping in not just a small way to shape British music history. I am proud to say I supported Mothers and the culture that it helped to build. Sheldonboy
