Hi denise
Yes I well remember the shops in Mickleton Avenue. You remember me asking if anyone new my old schoolmate Paul Martin in Adminton Road, well he used to work part time at the grocers after school. At the back of the shops was Hidcote Hall, in Hidcote Grove. My sister held her wedding there around 1967 I think. If you look at a road map southish of Brum, you will find the village of Hidcote, nearby is the village of Adminton and also the villages of Honeybourne and Pebworth. These are the names of the roads around the Mickleton Avenue shops. Norra Lorra people know that.
I remember the news agents well, I used to take my fils into there for processing. There was also a very good butcher whose name I think was Greg, that was in the late 70s.
I also remember a mini trade war between those shops. The newsagent was taken over, and the new owner started selling bread and all sorts of other things that the other shops specialised in. So all the other shops including the hairdressers started selling cut price cigartettes and papers.
They were a very useful and succesful bunch of shops, but in their final years they were desperate.  Sorry can't think of much more  SB

Hi SB,

well fancy that.

The name of the villages has really shocked me,what on earth was the connection???

I can remember going to a youth club at Hidcote Hall,it was held on a friday night.I think it was run by some students feom the teachers college over at Edgbaston.I remember falling madly in love with one of them LOL.

In later years I had my wedding reception there. We thought it was wonderful. Can you imagine folks doing that now??

I remember being in the area in later years and seeing the shops. They were indeen very run down and a sad shadow of what they once were.

I did not understand that as the nearest shops were the radleys,a good walk, you would think they would have continued to do well???

Hi denise
Glad to be of help, I used to go to that youth club, it was run by a reall good guy I think was called Stan, some of us went over to his place he lived in a room  in a cottage at Westhill College. He and his friends were student youth leaders. They took a van load of us to East London one weekend to a youth club in Wapping, they put a disco dance on for us, we had a great time.
Two of my best mates did the disco at Hidcote Hall, Roy Franklin and Ron Whitehouse they were called the Royon Sound, you may remember them.
Many many people had parties of all sorts at the Hall, many people would be glad of the place now. There are not many places around to have a party these days.
The viilage connection was probably a City planner who lived in that direction and wanted to put his mark on a new estate.
As for the shops surviving, I don't know if you Knew the Comberton Road Shops, well they disapeared as well. Not forgetting, when these shops were doing well' Asda. Sainsbury's, Tesco's etc never existed in the area. Poolway shops were and are about 15/20 minutes walk away. Believe me denise they are in a dire state. A birmingham mail reporter recently said the should be handed over to the Army for target practice. Some of us think that the already had been.   SB

Yes I remember the comberton Road shops, what a shame about the Poolway shops,I used to regularly walk past Blakenhale School and cut across the park.Woolies for everything pocket money could buy and the dear little Library.

It was there I discovered  the author Malcome Saville,I now belong tp the malcolm saville socety and we regularly vist his book locations.

So sad.The poolway was always a bit ugly but not as bad as it sounds now.

Denise
Thanks for the Malcolm Saville Introduction, I will try to give him a go. Poolway shops are due to be redeveloped, but no-one knows when. The five blocks of flats around the corner on the Meadway are being demolished, three have now gone.  SB

He was big on location and I fell in love with places
like Rye and shropshire through his writing.

I had an aunt who used to live in the flats, the  block on stilts.

She was the first person I knew who had one of those murel type pictures on her walll in the sixties, remember them??? ;D

Ken

You will have to tell us more than that, I thought Yardley Laundry was down Clay Lane way and The Shrubbery was a building up Church Rd way. There again I don't know much about Yardley and most of what I know about Acocks Green is from Driving through it on the way to or from work.

Hi Phil/
If you look at the picture of yew tree post office you can see the chimney stack of the laundry over the roofs left hand side.
