Yes mate I do believe all of Cannings went a good while ago, As far as I know at least some of the buildings certainly some of the land is being used for expensive apartments.  SB

Yes mate
Lucas are still trading, their website if you can access it on your planet is

     www.lucaselectrical.co.uk

But they are not the massive manufacturer that you knew.

sheldonboy,

Thanks for that, and they're at Coleshill too; a Birmingham postcode, but not really brum - but let's be grateful for small mercies in that something has survived into this century. O0

P.S. on ''our'' planet we have most things except sleet, slush and all the other jewels in the crown of your winters ;D

I don't know if Canning's are still trading today in one form or another, but I do know a little of their humble beginnings.

William Canning took over the business of an Edward Gunn after his death in 1837 when he married Gunns daughter. Gun had owned a druggists, grocer's and tea dealers on the corner of Kenyon St and Constitution Hill. From this humble start Canning built the business up to an international business.

The General Electic Company at Witton are long gone now. At least some of the buildings survive today. The Administation block thankfully is one of those, but I think most of the rest of it has gone.

The GEC was a big part of Witton most of the local people worked there or had some sort of connection. I think it covered a good part of Witton, it certainly took up most of Electric Avenue.

They had their own sports & social club as did most big factories in those days but I think The Magnet Social Club as it was called must have been one of the largest. It is still standing today but it is owned by the Greek Cypriot Association. It was quite a popular place in its heyday.

How about Bellis & Morcom; Woseley; (the proper) Kalamazoo; Taylor and Challon; Metro-Cammell Weymann; Norton, Aerial, Vincent, Vellocette; are Hardy Spicer or GKN still manufacturing in Brum - I think they might be?
Birmingham Battery & Metal Co. Limited, Midland Railway, Carriage & Wagon Company, Elliots of Selly Oak; M&B; Ansells, Atkinson's, Davenports...

Phew!
