Hi Dropacog

Welcome to the forum, I think most of us realise what we have lost in the manufacturing industry in Brum. I think Roy Ben's idea when he started this thread was for us to go through the list slowly and those of us who knew these companies to record any memories we have of them.

Did you work at any of the companies you mentioned and do you have any memories of them. If you have why not share them with us.

Unfortunately I was self employed for the major part of my life, so I only have a few memories of dealing with some of the companies that are now gone.

Hello Dropacog,

Welcome to the best forum in town.  As Roy and Phil have indicated, any memories of these companies are very welcome.   I remember a host of names, including those that you mention, but since I left brum 50 years ago, I've no experience of what's happened to them, so everything that you can contribute as well as being very welcome, will also be useful.

Hello Dropacog
Welcome to the family. Can it be taken by your name that you was some sort of an engineer or caster perhaps.  Sheldonboy.

Hi again dropacog,

Well there is at least one thing about your chosen profession, you don't hear of many legal firms going belly up.

Hi dropacog
I hope your firm doesn't specialise in conveyancing, I know some Legal Eagles who have had a tough time with the downturn in the housing market.  Have visited a pub in your area, The Jolly Fitter at Turves Green, I understand it's gone now.   SB

SB

You mentioned it and dropacog was born near it and it comes under the cover of M & B Breweries another gone but not forgotten Birmingham business. The only knowledge of this business was its wonderful product of which I was happy to sample often.

A photo of the Jolly Fitter, its housing now isn’t it?

An early representation of the Cape Hill Brewery

A photo of the same brewery in 2002 not long before it was flattened.

Spot on sheldonboy - times are very very tough for us property Solicitors - especially in the Midlands at the moment.  We used to have a Birmingham Conveyancing Solicitor team in Brindley Place but had they had to be merged into the central office when it all hit the fan last year.  Thankfully we do enough Conveyancing in Birmingham to retain the team which is super important from a local knowledge point of view.  Thing is they were forced to move to London which they were not overly happy about.  Sign of the times I'm afraid

Morris-Commercial, great workhorses: the Acocks Green & Olton Laundry used to buy their vehicles (once in a blue moon).

My granddad worked their and used to talk drivers into ''giving me a day out'' when I was on school hols from Clifton.  The pre-war one was OC 1590, and the 'new one' FHA 142 - I liked the old 'un most, as the window was better for leaning out of.  O0
