Thanks Tardebigge for the photo of the plaque and the fleet number of the bus. Frightening to think that it was nearly 60 years ago.

A wartime grey painted 1930 Vulcan body AEC Regent OG 421. The last without the platform cutaway and opening upstairs rear window. It is pulling a producer gas trailer in 1943.

Phil and Roy,

That's a great picture.  It seems that Birmingham City Transport had 25 of these AEC Regents converted to run on gas in 1942-43, under instruction from the Ministry of War Transport.  The gas was produced by the trailer burning anthracite, to conserve imported fuel.  These buses were operated from Perry Barr garage and ran on the 33 service to Kingstanding.  Performance was very poor so they were soon withdrawn and converted to normal fuel running.

That tallies with the account my father told me when he conducted gas - fueled buses on the 33 route. He recalled that he often had to ask any able-bodied gents on the bus to get off and push it up Warren Farm Road hill. (and no reduction on the ticket price!)

What I noticed most about the photo was how far the windows opened. I can just imagine today. Health & Safety would have a birthday.

There again can you just imagine what it would be like today. They would be climbing out on to the roof, throwing things at passing motorist and pedestrians. It would be a nightmare.

Hi John,

Super photographs.  Tom's model of Quinton garage is very impressive - great to see the model buses inside the garage, the only thing that is missing is MOF 79 !!
