Wonderful old pictures of Birmingham
« on: November 24, 2009, 12:26:54 PM »
This web site has been posted before, in 2007, but for new members, or those that have not seen it, here are some amazing pictures of Birmingham from the 1960s and 1970s.

Many were taken BEFORE the ring road was built, or during its construction, others show New Street being built and so on

Here is the original link from this forum to that web site in 2007

Everyone who hasn't already visited Mark Norton's website of his late father's fabulous pictures of Birmingham scenes in the post-war years should do so.  Highly recommended.

here is one of my favourite "Wonderful Old Pictures of Birmingham" from a much earlier time.

I think any picture of Birmingham is wonderful, but I have to admit that the old buildings had a beauty all of their own that can't seem to be reproduced today. They might try occasionally but they seldom seem to get it right. I suppose it's all down to cost.

I agree with that Phil.  A shame so many of the old  buildings are either gone or altered beyond recognition.  Here is another early shot of the Queen's and North Western Hotel.

Not really a building I suppose, but can you imagine a construction of this type being erected in a public place or park today.

Those ornate structures in our parks were superb.  This is the Great Western Railway's main terminal in Birmingham - Snow Hill Station.

This view up Corporation Street from New Street has never looked so go since those days. Which looks to be not long after the bottom end of Corporation St was cut through to New St.

Birmingham certainly knows how to demolish beautiful buildings.

Makes you wonder who has damaged the city most:- German planes, or Birmingham council !

I think the main reasons given by the trustees of the school for its being demolished was that is was structurally unsound. I'm sure that the fact that New St was rapidly becoming the one of the most expensive pieces of Real Estate in England had nothing to do with the trustees decision.
