Brasshouse Passage which once ran off Broad Street and is now mostly covered by Brindley Place except for the old Brasshouse building which is now the Brasshouse Restaurant.

Looking at the map below the pics I happened to see Oozell Street. I remember going there to apply for my first driving licence (1965) and subsequently applying for various vehicle taxes and licence renewals. Happy days.

The best thing they ever did was to make these facilities available on line. I would hate to add the hours I have spent in line waiting at Oozles St, then later at St Martins house Moor Street, and even later at Edward Street. Renewing road tax was simple and could always be done by post. but change of ownership and first taxation especially for commercial vehicles had to be done at the counter.

Bradford passage ran from Corporation Street to Temple Row parallel to the North Western Arcade and disappeared when Rackhams was rebuilt. Although I can post a photo of the Corporation St end and the Temple Row end along with a map of the location a photo of the passage eludes me at this time.

Thank you Townie for sharing this most interesting photograph. I wonder when the baths closed and why, have you any idea?

Apparently the owner of the baths a Mr Munroe moved them to 135 Snow Hill in 1851, though I believe the buildings remained for some time after, this photo was taken in 1913. It comes from the Shoothill Deep Zoom collection and it looks like it was originally taken by the Nechells photographer Sir Benjamin Stone though it doesn't credit him.

Thanks Phil, I never knew that there were baths available to the public which were privately owned. Were these washing baths, Turkish baths or what and I wonder how much it costs to use them.

Norman

I have scanned this copy of an advert from my copy of The City of Birmingham Baths Department 1851 - 1951 it should go a little way to answering your question.

Thank you again, Phil, reading those adverts makes the mind bogle. I rather fancy the idea of being waited upon by respectable and obliging Attendants.
