The out goings ££££ for people that have boats and some live on them is more than for a house. It costs around £2,000 a year just to be on the water.

Fred

It can cost a great deal more than that just to keep a caravan on a halfway decent site. Mine was over £2000 a year over 10 years ago when I sold it. If I'd have known mooring fees were so cheap I would have bought one.

Some things are false economy and it is better to rent when needed.

A guy I knew worked on The Flat, Lodge Rd, Hockley in the 90s and owned and lived on a narrowboat, don't know where it was moored but it couldn't have been too far away from his work, he had a constant problem with condensation.

One of my nephews lives on a 72 footer. Boats and caravans don't have a postcode so your mail as to be taken in by someone with a postcode. Clothes washing is another problem with boat life.

Fred. Years ago I lived on a narrowboat for a number of years, and believe me it costs a lot more than £2000 a year.
Was it a vision, or a waking dream?

Thanks Judy, great night shot.
Peg.
Coincidentally, if you were watching Gardener's World last week you'd have seen the daytime shot of the same place (complete with the Flapper & GP Tower) in the segment about roof gardens in London.  Quite why they selected a shot of the Birmingham canal system as part of a series of pictures to illustrate the lack of green space in London is another matter  ;D

Hi Judy, just goes to show it's a favourite vantage point for photographers.

I think that barges were wider and were able only to be used on rivers, and some canals, and then the larger narrower canals came along, hence narrowboats.

By the way, my relatives, name NEALE, were operating narrowboats out of Bedworth, Warwickshire, coal carrying in the 1850`s. There is some vague information somewhere about later members of that family, involved with brewing and carrying beer by narrowboat, from a wharf near Saltley.
