Phil & Mike,

Thanks for the great collection of pictures.  Interesting to see the works draped with camouflage. My mother worked at Cadburys after leaving school in 1936 until she was called up in 1942.  She tells me that part of the works was given over to Lucas during the war, making munitions.

I don't know whether it was Lucas that was responsible. The company was called Bournville Utilities. They filled rockets with cordite, covered aircraft fuel tanks to prevent leakage after battle damage and made over 5 million service respirators and cannisters (gas masks is what i would call these). When i joined Cadbury's in 1967 there were still procedures in the laboratory methods book for testing for gas (presumably they had to test the masks under real conditions). These weren't removed till about 1971

Potblack,

here is a postcard I found recently showing the Pavilion at Bournville.  It is postmarked 30th May 1908.  At first glance I thought the writing along the edge was a continuation of the communication, however it is actually a printed caption:
"Don't Forget to send the Bournville Cocoa Coupons, you will be delighted with the prize Box of Chocolates."

The Old Farm Inn on the corner of Linden Road & Bournville Lane is now The Old Farm Hotel.

According to Wikipedia no public houses have ever been built in Bournville. That's why I posted the photo just seemed strange.

I believe The Old Farm Inn was there before Cadbury's moved into Bournville and made it an alcohol free zone.
Phil died in 2020. RIP.
