Hi Phil,

Thanks for three more great reminders of how Northfield used to be.  That corner of Church Road and Bristol Road was always fascinating, especially the windmill in Parsons yard.  The Traveller's Rest thatched roof was replaced with a tiled roof at some point, nice to see pictures from two different periods.

Hi Brian

Heres another one of Northfield looking down the Bristol Rd towards the Bell taken in 1969. You can see in the distance the are building the Grosvenor Centre.

We seem to have a fixation on The Travellers Rest at the moment so here is another couple of pubs. The Black Horse, Bristol Rd and The Beeches Merritts Brook Rd.

I'd love that lorry outside the Black Horse to play with.

Both locals of mine and I worked at the Beeches when Charlie Mason was the gaffer, sadly the pub has now gone.

Another one of Northfield, this one should please the transport buffs as well. It shows a Leyland Tiger (JOJ237) passing under the bridge at Northfield Railway Station c1955. Its working the 27 route to West Heath i believe.

Hi Phil,

That's a nice photograph of the bridge with the 27 bus heading towards West Heath Road.  Here is a photo I took at the same location a little over 50 years after your shot.

There have been a few mentions of late on here. A pub I used to use in the early 70's with my brother in law. The Merritt's Brook. I believe there were one or two others that were known to frequent this house who are members of this forum.

I came across this today, a photo of the pubs outside and one of the inside with some of the regulars and the gaffer and his wife. Ron & Brenda,

The Brum pics twitter account recently posted one of Phyllis Nicklin's photos from 1968 showing Northfield.  By Woollies was a shop called Bradbury's that no-one seems to remember anything about.  Does anyone here remember it?

Hi Judith

I can tell you very little I imagine that this is the Phyllis Nicklin image that you are referring to, Bradleys was a butchers shop thar was listed in the directory's from 1964 to 1972. Given that the directory's are not printed until the following year that would mean the shop was there from 1963 to 1971. I have no doubt that you are now aware that it is charity shop. I have no doubt that Mike would be able to add more information as he was living local to here at the time.
