Hi Phil,

Thanks for the photos of formerly forgotten frontages - I was too young to drink when I left brum - but managed the occasional illegal - which naturally tasted the better for it.

Super photos Phil and sorry to go off topic slightly but do you have anything on Upper Highgate Street 1920-1940?

Hi Jacqueline

Here are the only photos I have of Upper Highgate St at the moment. I think you may of seen these a couple of years back as I think I remember you asking before. If you want any of these in a larger format, just ask and I'll see what I can do.

Hi All.
I wonder if anyone has any pictures of Hick St before it vanished when Belgrave Rd and the surrounding land was redeveloped, my wife lived there in the 60s. Thank You

Hi Bilsat

I'm afraid this is the best I can do, it's a photo of the café on the corner of Hick St & Conybere St.

The second photo is that the corner of Conybere and Upper Highgate, I was wondering because you can't see the church.

There could be several reasons for this, the main ones being that the photo is tagged with the wrong address. When you have been collecting historic photos for a while you find that a lot are compiled by idiots who obviously put too much faith in researchers.

Now it most likely is Upper Highgate St, but the corner of Emily Street or Angelina St. The other option is, it could be that early a photo that St Albans was yet to be built as it wasn't completed until 1899.

I'm sorry but I don't remember Upper Highgate Street well enough to say with any confidence which is the right answer.

Roys later photo answers the question, the chemist shop in his photo is the same shop as in my earlier photo. According to the trade directory W.H.Rhodes was situated at 162 Conybere St which was at the junction of Upper Highgate St. As I said perhaps my photo was too early to show St Albans.
