Wonderful site learnt so much from this site however during the early 1960's I frequented a modern jazz club called the grotto a cellar under a shop opposite the silverblades it was mainky a black only club and sold cider and rum and had many well known jazz men of the time open only on a saturday from 2pm to 6pm any help would be appreciated also the Chapel pub in Church street had lunchtime jazz and pop

I have noticed that we have a lot of new members on the forum which is great. I was wondering if anyone had any photos of the Ringway Club or Mexicarno café Bromsgrove Street. Here's hoping.
Was it a vision, or a waking dream?

Apart from the Ringway my other favourite nightclub was Pollyannas Newhall Street where I met one of the Fewtrells cant remember which one. I have just read  two conflicting reports that before Pollyannas was formerly called The Revolution and another says it was the Parasol. I don't remember either of them does anyone know if or any of them names are true.

Pollyannas was known as The Revolution before it was Pollyannas and it was owned by Don Fewtrell.

I frequented many of the pubs and clubs mentioned from the early 60s, I haven't read all the quotes, has anyone mentioned the "Prohibition" just across the road from St Martins Church (where I was Christened) We used to meet in the Tollgate pub sometimes before moving on.

I remember bunking off school to go dancing at the Casino, we were late getting back to Sparkhill Commercial and never tried it again. We also used to go to a dance school over Burtons in Sparkhill until our headmaster put a stop to that. I went to the Casino a few times,it was reputed to have a ghost. When the Locarno opened I went to work there in the office. The ballroom was the last word in luxury in those days. The ladies loos were called the boudoir, the toilet basins were alternate pink and blue, the powder room had wall to wall carpet and gilt framed mirrors. The ballroom manager was Albert Archer, his assistants were Steve and Tony. There was a 17 piece band headed by Colin Hulme which played every night except Mondays which was rock and roll night. Happy days!
Hi celia-h, I think the dancehall over Burtons was called The Star, I went a few times.
