A few photos of the Old Market Hall, the market hall was opened in 1835 at a total cost of £44,800 That was made up of £20,000 building costs and £24,000 for the purchase of the land. After being bombed out during WWII the building although still used minus the roof was left as a shell until its demolition and replacement by Manzoni Gardens in 1962.

Photo 1 ..... A print of the Market Hall a few short years after its completetion.

Photo 2 .....Inside view of The Market Hall in 1870 Showing The Central Fountain that was installed in 1851 at a cost of £900 but was removed in 1880 supposedly to be erected in Highgate Park but never was. It was destroyed in 1923.

Photo 3.....A photo of The Market Hall still complete with it roof, sometime in the 1920 or 1930’s.

Photo 4.....This photo shows the mess left by a night time visit of our EU partners in August 1940.

Photo 5.....This final photo of this lot, shows some of the tidying up works that were done to enble the Market Hall continued use as a market place until its demolition in 1962.

Hi peter brummy,

Thank you for these two fine pictures of the past and present, with

''the old Bull Ring of the 50's and an aerial view of the 2000's one''.

As I knew the 50's BR well, never saw the 60s version, it is very good to see such clear and clean progress in the juxtaposition that you posted them.

Thanks again, this terrific pair are far and away the best before and after illustrations of change to a single small area that I've seen....(before & after 60s in this case)

Thanks Tramp. Here's another few of the Bull Ring taken in the late 80's and early 90's.

The Herbert Manzoni Gardens was a place where King Kong could be found around 1969 - 71. Today he can be found on your way to Scotland, 2 mins from junction 40 on the M6.

Hi peter brummy,

Thanks.....for these which help to reconfirm that I missed nothing that would have been of great appeal to me in the 60s BR.  I know others liked, while at least one spent a while earning his bread on fitting and finishing it....   The only time it called my attention was when a childhood friend was killed in the 'IRA bombings'...nuf sed.

Heres what the inside of the fish, meat and retail market looked like in the 60's interior market.

A few more photos of the 60’s version of the Bull Ring. The new Bull Ring market was opened by H.M.Queen Elizabeth in June 1962 as shown in the first photo.

The second photo shows a mix of the old & the new, with the new and old Woolworth buildings standing side by side.

The last photo show the Bull Ring being demolished and the last time to see that marvellous quote by Birmingham Historian William Hutton. “Probably in no other age or country was there ever an astonishing display of human ingenuity as there may be seen in Birmingham”.

I wonder if that is on view anywhere in the new version?

It should of been " In no other age or country was there such an astonishing display of wanton vandalism as there may be seen in Birmingham. "
