Judith

The first time I went inside the new Bull Ring Centre was about 12 months ago, I just had no reason to be there.
I can remember going to the new Bull Ring not too long after it opened.  Used to use a few of the shops in there quite a lot in fact - there was a great bookshop for instance.

But the whole process of demolition & re-build, which must have taken years, I have no memories of even though for the entire duration I worked on Colmore Row, commuted in to Town by bus and often shopped around Town in my lunch break.   ::)

JudithM,
Does it take a longer to get to town now that it did years back. I used to travel from Solihull to Fisher and Ludlow in 25 minuets I bet it would take a lot longer now.

Fred

I never use the buses, but it takes me between 8 and 10 minutes to get into town from Solihull by train. I don't think that's bad at all.

Phil,
That sounds the best way to get to town. Someone I know travels from Sheldon by car to town to work and it takes around one hour.     :o

Why would anybody use a car, unless they have a private parking space. Parking everywhere else costs a fortune to park. I think the train cost at the moment is £3.90 return at peak times and £2.50 return off peak. With trains from Solihull you can get off at either Snow Hill or Moor Street

Looking at this 1960's view of the ramp in the Bull Ring my attention is drawn to how peoples attitudes change. Lyons are advertising Ladies nylon nighties at 14/11d and Ladies cotton nighties at 9/11d making the cotton ones about 30% cheaper. I think it would be the other way around today.

It would take much longer than that to get to Town from Solihull now.  It's been a while since I did that particular journey by bus in a rush hour, but my commute is a similar distance and it now takes me around half an hour longer to get home from work than it used to 10 years ago.

You'd be right.  Cotton products of many kinds are dearer than synthetic these days.

A wet and windy night in 1967 looking out across the Bull Ring from the bus stops outside St Martins House.

Caught buses there many at time.  At least you could wait under cover  :)

In 1967 there is a good chance that I could have been on that number 50 bus.
