Tribute to a well known brummie biker - Speedy RIP
« on: October 16, 2010, 04:37:43 PM »
With a sad heart we wish our friend of many years a sad goodbuy. :(

Tony Wright aka Speedy past away aged 61 on 8th Oct 2010. His funeral is Friday 22nd and will probably close many roads with the amount of bikers that will attend.

So sorry to hear your sad news, as he was obviously a friend of yours. I'm afraid I didn't know him or of him. There again I never mixed with bike people, but 61 is no age to die. I do so hope that it wasn't bike related.

I'm  sorry to hear more sad news.  It always hurts when we lose a friend.  I've not known any brummie bikers since the late 50s, a little before your friend's time.  I'm very glad to hear that he'll get a grand escort.

Jackie, I seem to remember a guy with the nickname Speedy at the Double Zero Club in Deritend late 60's early 70's.
As an ex Biker myself it's never good news to hear we've lost one of the Fraternity.
Ride the Golden Road, Pig free and endless. RIP Speedy.

Steve yes seems most likely the same guy. We also attended Double Zero but only now and again. We remember so many like Mad Mick, Gabby and Fanny B to name but a few.

The funeral was astonishing. We could hear the roar of the harleys as they approached. Some ten bikes ahead and 80 or more behind plus a bunch parked at the enterence. Must have been over 1,000 people in attendance

Speedy would have been so proud, just a shame he was not able to see it

Hi Jacqueline,

So pleased to hear that Speedy had a real Biker's Bye-Bye as so many obviously appreciated him a great deal to turn out in such numbers.  Good on you and your husband O0

I did not know the gentleman in question, but I am sorry to hear of his death and his families loss. This may sound silly but the words British biker especially Brummy biker fill me with mystique and nostalgia. When I was young I wanted to be a Brummy biker but ended up in the re-emerging 80s scooter scene i e Vespas/Lambrettas. Though I did not know this person I bet he had many experiences and many tales to tell of his exploits. Well at 45 I look back and think what if I had been a biker, Then I look at the UK cold weather and think I feel the cold too much to do it now.

Brenden,

I was never a teddy boy, a biker, a rocker, a mod, a hippy, a flower child, a punk or any of those things. I might have dressed in many of those styles and played at being some of them. What I did learn was to respect everybody no matter what class, colour or creed they were but to be my own man and do my own thing and not let people put labels on me.

      Hi Phil,

I do agree with your point, But sometimes being into a style or scene at certain points in our history must have been good for some. I dont mean the antisocial criminal types just those like minded people that have bonded at a certain point into a certain fashion or scene. Me and my wife went to John O Groats in Scotland and we saw a fair few motorcyclists in and around the area in very expensive matching riding suits and high performance race replica motorbikes. But 2 bikers who were having their pictures took stood out,They were bikers one riding a new type Triumph Bonneville, The other a Harley Davidson. Neither bikes were brand new and looked well used, But still cared for. Just seeing the scene they set filled me with wanderlust and nostalgia. I said to my wife that I would have loved to have done that trip in the 40s,50s, or 60s. She said why not do it now and I said its the wrong year as I am looking back with nostalgia. Then we saw some traditional scooterist club riding in and I had the same dreamy glare come back, My wife just shrugged and said I was having a mid life crisis.

for most of my young life the sea was my calling i always wonted to sail on a tall ship but never got the chance then in the mid 80s a friend of mine had a yacht left to him it was 28 foot seagoing six birth it was down at pool in Dorset got just about every thing on board that you could need to go to sea  one of my other mates also was in to boats and new how to sail and navigate he had 30 years under his belt so the three of us made a plan to sail the yacht around pool for a day or two to get the feel of it and make sure it was up to scratch

this was my chance to forfill a life's dream and go sailing on a yacht my mate said that it was up to the job and every thing was shipshape

three weeks later we was off to France from pool we decided to too have a four hour watch each the boat had auto pilot and i was going to take second watch from 23 30 i was told all i need to do was stay awake and keep my eyes open for lights and if i was not sure wake one of the others up well all was going well until about 0200 when the wind got up and the rain come i was wet to the skin and cold but no sure what was what i went below and got my mate out of  his bunk by this time I'm feeling a bit sick my mate said ill take the watch you get some rest could i sleep not on your life I'm now wishing that i was dead i felt so ill then one of them got the cooker on the go that was it the smell of food and the gas i just could not stop my self it come out of every part of my body if the boat had sunk i could not careless then I'm thinking what the hell am i doing hear this was going to be fun like hell it was for two days i was like this until France was in sight and all was well    O0
each day is a blessing and I bless each day when it comes
