Hi again John, been in touch with Jim, he told me he lived on Court Rd Balsall Heath also he wore a plaster over his right eye (lazy eye).
I lived around the corner from there, ask him if he remembers a little guy called Johnny Harper lived just before the factory ( Swift bikes),on the left hand side as you walked up to the Canon Hill pub.
Growing old is mandatory..........Growing up is optional

Hi John, Jim does remember you he said you used to live across the road from him. He said he hopes you are well and life has been kind to you.
I lived around the corner from there, ask him if he remembers a little guy called Johnny Harper lived just before the factory ( Swift bikes),on the left hand side as you walked up to the Canon Hill pub.

Hi Phil. Only just joined the Forum but I am interested in the list of shops below. We lived at 2/199 Gooch Street from 1946 to 1956. My brother and I both went to Hope Street School.
Do you by any chance have a list of shops for the same stretch of Gooch Street from 1950/56 period. I am thinking that the 1961 list you have published may have been after the start of part's of Gooch Street / Benacre Street. If my memory serves me right I believe that on the opposite corner to Turners was a greengrocers called Fields and Mumfords may have been next door to them. (could have bee next door but one.

Many thanks

Thanks Phil.
199 Gooch Street appears to have disappeared from the 1954/5 list of shops. I know it was there because our family lived at 2/199 before moving out to leafy Bartley Green in 1956. Mumfords is still in the same place on both lists and Fields was where I thought it was. Ansell & Rogers were in our yard and at the back of them was another house which was attached to ours. I presume this would have been 2/197.

Look forward to the next installment.

Fred

There could be one or two reasons why 199 is not listed but the main reason might be because at the time the directory was made up it was not a shop, it could have been unoccupied or being used as living accommodation only. Nothing is recorded in the 1955/56 directory either which suggests to me that it was no longer being used as a shop.

If I go back to 1950 199 is not listed then either, are you sure that there was a shop there and not just a house, because Kelly's only lists commercial premises.
