Does anyone know anything about Pongo Waring. I believe he played for the Villa sometime at the beginning of the 20th century. He was a favorite of my mother who was a big fan of the Villa

He signed for Tranmere Rovers in 1926, scored 6 of the 11 goals they put past Durham City F.C., and then moved on to Aston Villa for £4,700 two years later. A crowd of 23,000 saw him play on his Villa debut in a reserve game against local rivals Birmingham, in which he scored a hat-trick.
His 226 appearances for Villa yielded 167 goals, including 10 hat-tricks and a club record 49 goals in the 1930-31 season.

Good contribution W -Bet that was not a match day. Following on to Roy's words Pongo
probably found the 1930/1 season best netting 49 goals. The Villa who finished second to
Arsenal scored in every League home game in Division One. The quartet of Waring, Houghton, Walker and Beresford helped Villa to score 4 goals or more in 20 matches!
Darren -you have to get the strike rate up!
