I think darren Bent is money well spent
he is up there with the likes of drogba

will suit his style you look at last sundays
game we hit the bar 4 or 5 times a good
striker and we would have won easily

Does anyone know anything about Pongo Waring. I believe he played for the Villa sometime at the beginning of the 20th century. He was a favorite of my mother who was a big fan of the Villa

hi pooly welcome to the forum

He signed for Tranmere Rovers in 1926, scored 6 of the 11 goals they put past Durham City F.C., and then moved on to Aston Villa for £4,700 two years later. A crowd of 23,000 saw him play on his Villa debut in a reserve game against local rivals Birmingham, in which he scored a hat-trick.
His 226 appearances for Villa yielded 167 goals, including 10 hat-tricks and a club record 49 goals in the 1930-31 season.

Good contribution W -Bet that was not a match day. Following on to Roy's words Pongo
probably found the 1930/1 season best netting 49 goals. The Villa who finished second to
Arsenal scored in every League home game in Division One. The quartet of Waring, Houghton, Walker and Beresford helped Villa to score 4 goals or more in 20 matches!
Darren -you have to get the strike rate up!

You are right Pete still if Darren gets two tonight and Brad keeps them out that will do
Forecast:   WN 0 AV 2
back to history The first season at their new ground was dismal but the one after saw the
club take the Division One championship for the fourth time beating Liverpool in a decider
on the last day of the season. Who was it? Yes Liverpool trounced 5-0. The success next
season saw the Villans take the championship again as the twentieth Century dawned.
A special game was played on 20111899 when a team of Kaffirs were visitors to the Lower
grounds. John Devey captained the home side and the match caused much hilarity jumping
athletically over the Villa players and drinking stout at half time The natives were
all novices and beaten by 7 goals to 4  Wheldon and Billy George the keeper were
amongst the scorers. Freddy Wheldon bamboozled them and he was dubbed 'Mighty
Football chief' by the players in a highly successful event. maybe that was how S.A
started on the road to the World Cup levels we know today. Link up soon
