You are talking about the Golden Cross pub and the shops would be the ones that include Ryders Army & Navy surplus Store. Sorry it's not the place, but keep trying you are getting closer.

Roy,

You are very close, but it's not down toward Chad Valley.

By road pick a point about halfway between your Golden Cross & Chad Valley attempts, remembering the hint about being between a king and a duke.

Think that it is the corner of High St and War Lane Harborne may be known as Princes Corner and the Pubs previously mentioned The Duke of York and The Kings Head

You  are right with the location and right with both pubs, even though they are gone now.

Thanks Phil  it was that bay window over the shop that was the clue. There is a photo on 'The Francis Firth collection of the same place but from a different angle

Hi All,
I cant believe people are still talking about the Eagle. My Mum and step -Father owned the pub for a few years until we left there in 1985-1986. The pub was on the bend in lodge road directly opposite the service road between All saints Hospital and the Green prison. My parents names were Betty and Barry and the owners before us were Betty and Johnny Poppet. I loved living there and we had a great pool team with Steve Poppett as the captain.

Hello Chris welcome , My Mother and Father in law used to drink in  there years ago in the 60's the gaffer then when you asked him what he'd got for his dinner the answer seemed to be the same always "chicklings "
