Double Zero Club and Rockers of the 60's
« on: February 25, 2011, 07:34:43 PM »
Just had to start a link in retaliation to the Mods link. My husband was prefect at school until he grew his hair long and wore a leather jacket (St Albans school and lived in St Martins flats). His dad had a motorbike as did his uncles so little wonder that at the age of 16 he got his first 650cc - no helmet L plates and allowed to ride it without a full licence as long as it had a side car. These were real bikes then - lovely sound of an English engine, grease and oil everywhere and a few kranks on the pedal to get it started. True to fashion of the time, he become a wild spirited lad joined a gang and took great pleasure in sorting out the mods - trips to the seaside etc. At this time he was a member of the 00 club based at St Basils. Almost a pensioner he is nearly grown up now! We sold his Matchless to the motorbike museum decades ago but think it became a casualty of the fire

Hi"Mother Goose, that brings back memories,  the double zero's we where not as bad as people made us out tobe, ok we where the men, we did manly things, we raced up and down the Smallbrook ringway, stop by the police so oftern they knew us by our first names,  the snake bar across the road from a large hotel, ( forgot the name, its been so long ago,) I was becak in the UK some years ago, and passed the place where we used to met, but they built a bloody large block of offices there now, so nothing was left, the only time we could race with out the police stopping us was when we carried blood from one hospital to another, we almost had a police escort..yepe.. happy days, ( I belive Dave coilier, became a cannon of the Church later)...J2

So at 3:00 in the morning there would be Mick with the other bikers and all of the a sudden they would jump on their bikes and head off somewhere like Rhyl or Blackpool and that was after a skinful. I can only assume the speed or the pies had sobered them up a bit.

Another event would be the night time races in Digbeth. They used to block off one off the streets(fazeley, I think) and have illegal races into the city centre.

and then theres the time they went to a cafe and were told - 'no leathers' so they said ok, dropped them in a pile on the floor and sat down. He assures me they were happy days.

I am sure there are more anecdotes about the night time goings-on in the city centre back in the sixties/seventies

Mother -Goose,.. remember when we had visitors from Wolverhampton and they wanted to rip the double zero's club apart, but Dave said, dont react, but we where ready for a fight, I even had a iron bar placed behind the fridge ( on the left ) the night passed off ok, a little tence but not much trouble, only later  it got around that every one ws running away when the guys from W/hampton , well it was not true, we where ready and you just dont know much we where ready, remember that small entrance as you came in off the road, ( they could only come in one of the time,) ... but we had happy days/nights there...J2

Oh gosh myself and hubby probably knew you all back then.

John re the Wolverhampton clash. Have you read the double zero book by David Collier? It starts with that clash and states that the bikers hid in the church while he faced the uninvited guests. SO UNTRUE. :(  Hubby [Dave] had dropped me off a few streets from the club while he went looking to defend DZ but picked me back up within 10 mins. :)

Did any of you have nicknames [bikers names] as we would love to remember you all.

Dave was ok, but I got the feeling because he started the club, it was if there are any spotlights, shine them on me sort of thing, and with his late night chat on tv it made him more poular, but he was ok. most of us got on with him but was his club, not ours, remember Alex snack bar/van, well last time I was in Brum I drove past where it used tobe, they have gone and built a bloody big office block there now, I know some where there are some photos of it some where, as it was back then,

A friend gave me a copy of Collier's book a few months back, I re-read it. I've not often read tripe like that. I joined the club in '68, only had a Bantam then but soon got a 250 which got a 350 engine dropped in soon after.
Who do I recall, John who was the Committee Chairman, I think he was a fork lift op at HP for a while. Les the Ted, Johnny Rocker, was it Mick? the Priest who cooked those great little hotpots? Johnny Windsor, Pete & Nij Heyes, Iron Goldie Paul, B33 with Goldie cam & piston, Little Winker, had a 441 engine in a 250 frame; so many more names I've forgotten now.
We'd have trips out to the Cavern in Walsall, Bank holidays to Mallory Park. A lot of us stood on the roof of a smelly urinals there to get a better view and the roof caved in.
Saturday nights to the Odeon for the late night showings.
Some of us got a darts team together and played for the Forge pub just up the road, corner of Fazeley St, Colin the Midget was one of our best players. Used to come on his little monkey bike, he had a long aerial on the back with a pennant on it, said it was 'cos he nearly got squashed between 2 buses as the drivers couldn't see him due to their angle of sight.
