Phil, vis-a-vis your photo of the Law Courts, I presume all the barristers chambers (Fountain Court was one of them) still exist near the law courts?

There were Barristers chambers all around the law courts. Fountain Court is actually on Steelhouse Lane and has undergone a face lift and renovation in recent years. Although I haven't got round to Steelhouse Lane yet here is a little taster. Fountain Court as it is today.

While we are down this end of Corporation St and I think it is as far as we will go because I always considered the other side of Lancaster Place as out of town. While we are down here we can take a look at the block of shops from Ryder St to Lancaster Place.

After heading back up to James Watt St - Newton St on the left is Sloopy's night club not a place I ever used myself but I'm sure many have memories of it.

I think that Sloopys was a later addition to Corporation St, and it must have been opened after I stopped using the town because as I said I never got in there. In fact the only club I used around that area was known as The Press Club which for the life of me I cannot remember where it was exactly as I only ever used it about twice. It was just a dirty little squalid after time drinker.

Good piece of work John, and as you say Dek just across the road from The County Court on the corner of Newton St and Corporation St. Next door to Murdoch's piano sales, and good old Harry Parkes who must have give it all away by now.

Hi there
Sloopys came into existence in 1971 following the closure of Mothers  in Erdington.

That explains why I never used it then, by that time I was an old married man and banned from such places. I was only allowed down the local where there were no dolly birds.

Back to our walk around the town, next door to Sloopys was the old Gazette building that later became The Birmingham Mail buildings with Maples furniture store next to that. Then the Grand Casino Dance Hall where all you young ladies used to nick into for the dinner time dances in your dinner break and then the hang out of the Teddy Boys in town kings Hall Market.

Fountain Court

Phil, maybe Fountain Court has been renovated, but it looks exactly as I remembered it.

Not me, never heard of the place.

That would make sense as that would put me at age 20 years. I loved Sloopys to pieces, but what a death trap it was looking back. A basement disco with only one exit probably.
