Wednesday lunchtimes was my time for 'bopping' at the Casino. That was in 1955. When did it close?

Happy days.

I believe it closed in 1960 and was demolished a couple of years later.

Phil,
Your photo's of the City, old and new certainly start the old memory cells flowing once again. My trips down town for a evenings night out where very rare indeed.
However,I do recall on one occasion when home on leave from Germany my brother taking me down Town, for an evening out and we finished up in a German bar .
I can't remember where we were but I thing that it may have been the Lowenbrau or it was Lowenbrau beer that we were drinking. Any idear where it was.?

Gee Gee,

You are talking about the Beer Keller in Cannon St probably which opened about 1963 or 1964. I will be getting around there later so keep your eye on the thread.

Gee Gee,

If you were anything like I used to be then it was probably on all fours. I remember one famous night me and my mate Alf walked all the way from the Tower Ballroom to the Manzil in Digbeth there were quite a few subways on that journey and we fell down every set of stairs on the way but we got there in the end and enjoyed a great curry before getting a taxi home.

Looking across the road from the Kings Hall Market you would have seen Old Square. If we went back to the 1700's we would have been greeted by a formal laid out residential  Regency Square with large houses and hotels.

By the 1900's most of these had gone and they had been replaced by Berlin House which was a sort of mixture of shops, offices & apartments. On the other side of the still unroofed Minories at this time was Newbury's department store.

By the 1930 both these had disappeared and Lewis's new department store had taken over one side of the square completely.

By the 1970 if you looked toward Old Square and all you would have seen was a big hole in the ground.

Hi Phil

Glad to see you will be covering more of the City Centre.

Maybe you will find a photo of "Jimmy's" or it might of been the "St James' Bar".
It was opposite the Kardoma on New Street but I haven't found anyone else who remembers it.

I think its quite possible you are talking about the St James Restaurant that was quite close to Burlington Passage so we might catch a glimpse of it when we get down to New St. But this was the original St James Tavern in New Street and that is what I call a pub.

Thats an incredible photo, Phil.
It looks a cross between Yates Wine lodge and West Minister Hall.
Can you date it?

Sorry mate I am unable to date it, and I can't even locate it for certain better than just New Street. In fact it was Mikejee who came up with the thought that it might be the forerunner of the St James Restaurant so perhaps it might have been on the same site.
