church hill, northfield
« on: May 17, 2011, 08:38:03 PM »
Hi everyone,

I am new to the forum and was hoping that some of you guys can help me.
I have recently moved to the church hill area of northfield and I am interested in old pictures of the area as the history of places is of great interest to me. Inpeticular I believe there used to be a fruit & veg shop on church hill?

Any information or old pictures would be brilliant.
I look forward to hearing from fellow users and getting to know and hopefully helping others out.

Thank you,

James Taylor

Hi James

Welcome to our forum,

How far are you going back for this fruit & veg shop, because all I can find is Walter Smith Grocer at 43a Church Hill until 1973 and then next door at 45 appears C.G.Boardman Greengrocer. Would either of them be your shop?

As far as photos go I'm afraid I have only have the one of Church Hill and that is quite old, I have others of Church Lane & Church Rd.

Hi Bobby

The trouble is that if you want to see those photos, do you not have to have a facebook account?

Thanks for that link Bobby, some shots of familier places of our youth.
It always looked exciting and fresh when I was a kid, but looking back now the Bull Ring looks quite grotty.
I'm sure the new Bull Ring will lasts longer than the 60/70 version did

Hi,

Thanks guys for a great response.

Phil, I was unaware of the shop at 43a. Very interesting. I live in 45a, this used to be the greengrocer that you mentioned. How do you come upon this information?
Thank you for the picture, I dont think that i have seen this one before. Its brilliant.

I have not got a facebook account so i do not think that i can view the pictures on there, will have to sign up now. I knew facebook would get me in the end, ha.

Again thank you for all your replies regarding my request. I really appreciate it guys.

James Taylor

Hi James

The information came fro the 1973-74 edition of Kelly's Trade Directory. The various directories go back to the late 1700's and are a marvellous source of information on shops business etc.
