Hi Bobby

The trouble is that if you want to see those photos, do you not have to have a facebook account?

Hi Phil
I think you have to click on the "LIKE" button once you are on the page.
I'm not an expert on how Facebook works but I'm sure I was able to view them before I opened an account. In fact I was just looking this morning & there are some great pic's of the old Bull Ring just been posted.

You can lead a horse to water but, a pencil must be lead.

I have altered the colour balance of your photo, as it seems to have faded slightly

thank you phil, these pictures are great.
do you or anyone else know why the stone was outside the pub and not in the pound as it is today?

I don't know a lot about it but I think that the original site of the stone was outside the Inn, but I think in recent years that it was moved to the pound for safety. I'm not sure if  the stone was there before the Inn because the Inn is a lot older than it appears to be, but you would need someone who knows more  about Northfield than I for a definite history. In my opinion the stone was probably used as an aid for mounting your horse after a jar or two at the Inn.

The implication from what I have read is that the stone was deposited at that spot by glacial movements in the ice age from Wales, and was there until moved to the pound. Certainly I would have thought that the facilities available at the time the inn was built would noy have encouraged people to move it unless they had to. the present Inn is c 1500, but there was one there before.

I bow to your superior knowledge, as I said I know very little of the history of the Great Stone. Though I would agree that it was probably deposited in situ originally by a glacier as there are quite a few knocking around Birmingham.

Interesting replies regarding the great stone. i knew the pub was old but i didn't know that it was c1500. As for the actual stone itself, i heard, like you said Phil that it was used to tie horses to when having a pint or two but also used to tie escaped livestock to. The farmers always knew were to find their escapees!
Not sure how true this is and i certainly have'nt seen any cows running round church hill for a few years now.

Thanks guys, really enjoying peoples views and memories of the area.
