In the sixties Varna road and surrounding streets were the busiest red light areas.  As a Taxi driver in the mid to late sixties you certainly had your eyes opened and, if lucky, earned good money driving the girls about.  Mind you it had nothing on Honolulu a couple of years ago, when travelling to the airport at 6am the streets were still full of ladies of the night, or morning :)

Yep. Varna Road was the most well known place for prostitutes in those days. Sitting in their windows and waving to any guy who passed by.  :)

Now I don't ever remember it being that bad down Varna Rd, but I do know that when they demolished some pretty good houses on Varna Rd, Princess Rd And Alexandra Rd just to get rid of the working girls they just all moved around the other side of Calthorpe Park to Cheddar Rd where it was worse than ever.

A mate of mine who joined the Merchant navy told me that, on a number of occasions when he'd struck up a casual conversation in (say) a bar in a foreign country and had mentioned that he came from Birmingham UK, he'd been asked, "Do you know Varna Road?" :o       It was THAT famous! ;D
There's no B/S on Planet Malc.

And a lot of the older generation still remember it. LOL
Was it a vision, or a waking dream?

I remember those days but later I lived on Gillott Road and it was pretty busy down there too. Also Rotton Park Road and Selwyn Road.
