Cox Street West - 1881
« on: December 20, 2011, 07:22:38 PM »
I know none of you would of been alive in 1881 but does anyone have any photos of the street or a house in this street. I would really like to know what the houses looked like.
Looking at the census for 1881 there were some biggish and semi well-to-do families living in this street.
Is this street even still there?

Thanks for any replies

Hi Sam

If you look through any of the Balsall Heath or Highgate threads I'm sure you will find photos of Cox St West and Upper Cox St. I know you will because I posted most of them.

At the time you mention 1881 most of the houses down there would have been almost new. Alas it was demolished in the slum clearances between the 70 and 80's and it no longer exists.

Have you a house number because we have a gentleman on here (Mikejee) who has lots of photos of Cox Street that might possibly have a photo of the house itself.

By the way, welcome to the forum

If you say what number you are interested in, then i'll see if I have a picture of it.these would be from around when the street was demolished in the early 70s

Hi Mike

You have got a photo of the house in question, when you took the photo it was commercial premises by the name of the Solid Brass Ring Co.

The house is the Brass ring manufacturer, it would be more than 4 bedrooms. possibly 5 as there is an attic. We have a member John200 who lived in Cox Street West. When he comes on he might be able to tell you more.

The following is something I wrote elsewhere about no 37:
No 37 was the Solid Brass Ring Co. This had been there since the late 1940s , and was first described as a curtain ring manufacturer and later a a brass chain manufacturer. In the immediate pre-war period 35-38 were  listed as a garage, but from the end of WW1 up to 1932 nos 35-37 were the home of Blackhams, brassfounders., and a part of this previous to this was Lycett & co, brassfounders.. But from about 1890 – 1897 it was the home of William Dawkins, who first described himself as a photographic frame manufacturer, but later expanded this to photographic apparatus manufacturer. Before this no 37 houses immediately to the right of it held many trades, often only for a year or so, including whip maker, window blind maker, leather boot lace maker and tortoiseshell folder maker.
The size of images on this site is limited, but  have cropped the image to thehouse front and redued it to try and get better resolution for you

Do you think it was always a commercial property or do you think those ground floor double doors might have been a later addition in place of a window?

I'm pretty sure it was originally a house like the ones to the right of it. The top frontage seems to run with these houses and before 1890 there is no one listed living there, which probably means it wasn't commercial property. The house to the left was demolished by bombing (I think). In 1940 no 37 was Henry Walker, upholsterer, but then is missing in 1943-44 and reappears in 1946 as a garage.  I think this building was also damaged, and if you look carefully the lower brickwork looks a lot newer (including round the large doors). I think the doors were installed for the garage.
