Yes it is the rear entrance of Mary Street School in Upper Cox Street, somewhere else on the forum I'm sure Mike has posted one of his original photos of the front of the school which was taken around the time it was being demolished.

I have seen those, thanks and I still remember when we were taken to the front of the school to be shown and told about the new Belisha beacons.

I went to Mary Street School and left in 1939 to attend the Central Grammar School. The back entrance to the playground was in Upper Cox Street and I remember that near that entrance was a place, in the pavement, into which a standpipe could be put. In the summer a cart used to fill with water which would then go round the local streets spraying water to keep the dust down. I am not sure but I expect the water cart was pulled by a horse.
My Mom went to Mary Street school around the same time as you, her name then would have been Joan Grange

My memory of those days is rather vague, we had a teacher named Miss Shutt, I think, who insisted on being called Madam not Miss and I think the Head Teacher was Mr Baker.

Hi Sandra,

Welcome to you, if you keep an eye on the forum I'm sure Mikejee will be able to fix you up with a photo. He has lots ofCox St west just before the street was demolished. I could probably sort you one of his out, but as they are his photos I think it's best he does it. He looks in nearly every day so I'm sure you won't have to wait long.

The size restrictions of the site are a bit small, so I have reduced and cropped the photo I took back in the early 1970s, just before no 68 was demolished. It is the house with the brown paint

I don't suppose anyone has a picture of 75 Cox Street West? My grandparents, Horace and Rose Bruce lived there

Nothing to do with this thread but it reminded me that my great Grandmother lived in
Longmore Street. At the beginning of the 20th century.  She or they rented a"back house" .
Does any have or know where I might find a picture/ photo of these old houses?
