Hi Roger,

Glad you liked the photo of No. 45.  I have got some images of the KH TASCOS shops, got to go out now but will post this evening.

Roger,

This is the TASCOS at 62 High Street, just around the corner from Bank Street, next door to the bank.  This shows the branch as a self-service store.

Here's a nice view up Kings Heath High Street dated 1954. If it was only that clear of traffic now. I always go round it if possible, not a good thing for the shops regarding passing trade.

Poplar Road is one of the side roads off High Street which has always been a busy shopping area. Seen here in the 1920s.

This is a favourite early 1950s postcard view of the High Street, looking north taken from a position near Woolworths.

The junior school building can be seen on the corner of Institute Road and unlike earlier photographs of the school we can see that the tower has now lost the steeple.  Looking to the left we can see the side of the MEB showroom and on the opposite corner of Silver Street we can see Skans the tobacconist.  In the early 1960s Skans became the Silver Grill.  A little bit further down High Street on the left is the distinctive tower of the Hare and Hounds on the corner of York Road.

The photographer stood in the centre of the road and the lines running down the tarmac indicate that this was taken after the tram tracks had been removed.

This is a super early 1930's postcard view of the High Street looking south from a position just north of the junction with Heathfield Road and York Road.

Lots of activity here with shoppers, a few parked bikes and very few cars.  Even the dog on the right-hand side can take its time to regain the pavement from the roadway !  On the left (east side) we can see part the grand building which was called "The Mart" by the architect, although to my knowledge it was never known by that name.  Halfords, and nearer to the corner with Heathfield Road, Foster Brothers are two of the seven shops which comprised this building.

In the distance we can see the school on the corner of Institute Road and at this time the tower still has its spire.

If you look carefully at the shops on the right-hand side of the High Street in the picture I posted at Reply # 60 you will see a shop which is topped off with a triangular facade (where the dog is standing). This was Rhodes China and Glass Shop.  Here is a picture of the Rhodes shop which shows the shopfront in detail. Note the decorative stonework.

Jump forward in time to the late 1960s and here we have a view of Rhodes shop as it was at that time.  Note that the triangular top of the storefront has gone, however part of the decorative stonework is still present on the columns at the side of the window. This picture shows the now long gone Spiers Furniture shop and the Hare and Hounds pub on the corner of York Road.  It also shows the block of shops on the High Street between York Road and Silver Street.

Thanks go to Terry Pearson for making this and the preceding picture of Rhodes shop available.  You can see his photostream on Flickr by searching for "Quadbod".

One more from Terry Pearson's collection - the view from Rhodes shop showing the east side of High Street King's Heath, looking south in the late 1960's.

Foster Brothers on the corner of Heathfield Road and all of the other shops in that block were demolished in the 1980's.  Part of the next block on the other side of Heathfield Road is still intact.  The corner building is occupied by Lloyds Bank in this shot and we can see Halfords and Boots.  At the very edge of the picture we can just make out the tower of the junior school on the corner of Institute Road and just to the left of the school was Englands shoe shop.

Another view of the High Street on a typical busy day. It almost looks as busy as it is now.

Heres another one on the High St at the corner of Popular Rd. Its Lashfords Butchers with the slaughterhouse at the rear.
