Phil I think the confectionery was built for the Co-op
Because this is where I believe where the farriers  Workshop was
this I've read somewhere but can't be 100%with my memory

Do you remember the building having a CWS sign on it. Local people thought it was a warehouse. I'm looking at about 1970. The Co op also opened a shop in Adderley Road if my memory serves me well. I went from the park to The Wheels Project so was down that way weekly.
Best wishes...Diggory

I never saw a C W S sign could it have been B C S
I would say all local people would have known it was Co-op grocery Warehouse
With all the large vans having grocery sign written on them
It was 1970/71 when we moved to Garretts Green
There was not a Co-op shop in Adderley road
The nearest being No 1 Alum Rock Rd next to the Mitre Pub
The corner of Adderley Rd

Hello Everyone
The pub was the Tilt Hammer, was this because of the metal factories in Adderley Road where they did all sorts metal work. The Co oP at some time in their history had a branch at 17 Adderley Road or is their another Adderley Road in Birmingham. If you go on line and look at the history you will see this address.  When I started training in 1956 I had to write the history of The Rochdale Four Pioneers. No Google or anything just dedication and hard work. I will never forget it. Some things stick in the memory.
Best wishes to Everyone...Diggory.

That's how people learnt in them days, and you remembered it. Today its so easy to go on sites like google and find what your looking for, and 5 minutes later you have forgotten it.
Was it a vision, or a waking dream?

I also thought Diggory was talking about recent times according to his original post as he talks about his memory serving him well. Well I know my memory is not that good so I looked it up, the branch at 17 Adderley Road was opened in 1881 and was named Branch number 1, this caused confusion less than 20 years later when they transferred to 3-5 Alum Rock Road (next to the Tilt Hammer and called that Branch number 1. Don't forget these were the Birmingham Industrial Co-operative Ltd. As we all know the BCS number 1 branch was on the corner of Great Francis Street & Newdegate Street and it also opened in 1881.

I could find no further record of a Co-op branch shop in Adderley Street between 1881 and 1974, although there was a Wrensons grocery shop at one time. Though I have to say that I find all these names a little confusing myself. BCS, CWS, BIC, surely they were all the same outfit? Another thing, I always knew Adderley Road as Adderley Park Road and always thought that was the official name and even though I have often seen it referred to as such apparently it has been Adderley Road since it was cut,

Phil , Gr Francis St Co-op was until it was demolished
Was called Old Central I believe that this was known as central
Until they opened central in the city centre and all office staff moved to there
This I believe took place in 1927  And Gr8 Francis St became Old Central
The C W S was started as a bigger central buying power in Manchester
for the various society's that had Started up throughout the country
B'ham industrial changed its name when it began taking over smaller society's
I believe when they swallowed up Soho Ind Society  who also had there own bakery

The pic you are displaying I think is No1 branch Alum Rock Rd
The pic I've seen the first Co-op Adderley Rd  on the forum was an old converted house
And this is how I remember No1branch in my time having delivered grocery to this branch

The information I have says that the first High Street store was opened in 1916 after being purchased in 1914 then in 1927 they purchased the Metropole Hotel an linked the two building by building over and under Scotland Passage. I suppose that is when they moved the offices there. Previous to that the board room and offices were on the first of the adjoining building in Newdegate street.
