Good find townie....I remember the carnivals too well..My father with others did all the organising for the carnivals....Proceeds were for the new playing fields built where they are now.....The field for the carnival was used for a few years...the last I remember was 1959 or 1960...  Wilsons fair was held up the shardway before the flats were built....I have some pics from a street party for the coronation in 1952.....plus a pic of alderlea prefects from 1958... reports of the harlequin pub reminds me of the opening day...news went round of free beer for the first patrons......not true as it turned out....I was second to be served...it was frequented many times after that....What years were you in shard end and what years at alderlea

I started at Alderlea in 1973. I lived in Stechford Road, actually nearer to Washwood Heath Comp. Used to get the 55 bus. It seemed that if you lived on one side of Stechfored Road you went to Alderlea & the opposite side went to Washwood Heath.

Hi Dan66 How did you find Alderlea? I hated every minute of the school. In fact I was absent more that I was there.

Hi Townie
I never wanted to go there but we had no choice! Survived 5 years. Enjoyed the football! Got 5 O levels, a miracle! Living in South Africa now.
cheers

Just a bit of info for you about Alderlea.
The school was opened as a mixed school in 1954, but was re-organised in 1956 for boys only on the opening of Longmeadow Girls County Secondary Modern School. It was closed in July 1986.

Hi wiseman I thought I knew a lot about Shard End, but I don't remember Days shop. What was it and where about was it. I might be able to get my bearings then.

Yes I remember the shop now. I am sure that at one time it sold fishing tackle. Wiseman did you live by the doctors?
