Don't forget Phill, we all lived in the same area, no one had a car,( later we did,) but when we where kids, we had nothing, my old mate used to take the bedsheets to a pornshop somewhere in the town, and pick them up on Friday. I always used to complain that we had no money, and the reply was your only miserable when you've got money. ok, but you can be miserable in comfort. I aways said. but I remember my first bike,my uncle bought it for me from the chip shop in Balsall Heath Rd, I was Mobile, what a thing it was to be Mobile, I think I went everwhere on that bike, don't forget our world was between the Mosley Rd down to the Bristol Rd and from Mosley Village down to Cheapside, and the funny thing is I would never part with those memories......spending Christmas in a back house and later in life, to a Wooden Chalet  for the new year, high in the French Alps, I think we have all come a long way since then, .... ;D

When I used to work in Lower Essex Street our local was the White Lion (I think it was called that) it had a mixture of locals from the surrounding area and a few guys who could get you anything, anything at all. These underground characters would sometimes tell stories of a pair of brothers who had a notoriety to rival the Krays. They build a Birmingham night club empire and attracted the leading names in entertainent to the Midlands. Their henchman, enforcer was Pat Roach he kept order and arranged swift justice to those who stepped over the line.
I've rarely heard them mentioned, Does anyone know of the Fewtrel Brothers
Never argue with an idiot, they'll drag you down to their level and try to beat you with experience.

Langstraat,

Eddie Fewtrell and his brother Don owned most of the clubs in Birmingham that I used to use in the sixties. I occasionally caught sight of one or the other in the various clubs. I don't remember ever seeing Pat Roach with either of them. I knew Pat Roach when he was minder for a bloke known as Cockney Joe. who used to run an unlicensed poker games in Balsall Heath and Pat Roach was always with him. He didn't have his beard then, believe me he was no gentle giant.

Don Fewtrell hung himself in his flat last year, and they had a big funeral, Eddie is back in the club game now at 70 years of age. I think his place is up Broad st. He has just wrote a book about the club scene in Birmingham. He tells of the night he threw the Krays out of Birmingham. (I don't think so).

I've been meaning to get a copy of the book, thanks for reminding me.

See the discussion has changed so i did create a good thread.....my excuse and i stick to it ;D

However Graham i do agree about media fame. I presume you were still living in the uk when you won your races. I have a relation who was said to be a top golfer and an english champ in his time 70.s or 80,s yet i have never seen his name listed anywhere.

Phil, i wondered where i said hero and noticed it was when i refered to Jasper. Sorry it was a tongue in cheek comment and guess what guys...i am not blonde ;D

Hello Jacky,

Yes it was a good idea to re-energise the thread LOL.
I've continues to wade through the back catalogue of postings and see what you mean about heated discussions. I've seen the same happen on other boards I belong to. What always intrigues me is where the posters go to. I note that the early members from here have all but gone, with you and Graham and John being some of the founders who still remain but many more have disappeared.

I'll add to the list of notable Brummies: The Winwood brothers, Steve was my favourite.
I saw the mention of the Fewtrel Brothers, over in Yam Yamland they had their equivalent pair in the Richardson's I think they built Merryhill and are at present connected with the redevelopment of Fort Dunlop. I think they had some Shady dealings in their past too

Tyke,

You can't even fit the Richardson brothers in to the same league as the Krays and Fewtrells. It was a different ball game altogether. There were never any claims of dirty deeds associated with those two lads. Unless it was selling a punter a dodgy vehicle. I knew Don and Roy before they got into property.

We bought one of our first lorries from them when they had a commercial vehicle sales pitch in Oldbury. They were a nice pair of lads, but the lorry was rubbish. Some time later we tried to trade it in on another lorry with them and they only wanted to give us about 25% of what we had paid them.

I heard that they bought the old Jensen works and were going to build their own lorry based on a British Leyland engine, but BL wouldn't sell them the engines. So they sold the factory on and made a profit. Thus the beginnings of a property empire and another legend is born.

Roy,

I've had many songs of praise, from all walks of life and nationalities, but ones like these from my own towns men and women I find very pleasing. Thank you all.  O0

I've had a wonderful life and I'm still enjoying every minute of it. Who could ask for more that to have been at the top of your chosen sport in a wonderful era like the 60's? Here's a 'gem' from the 'Summer of love'. Britain, two world road cycling champions in the same day, 1967, Beryl Burton & Graham Webb. it had never been done before! The Beatles ruled the world in entertainment, and we both ruled in cycling.

Phil,
To my knowledge the Krays never came up to Brum.  Their so called henchmen, the Lambrianous brothers did.  Tony, Nicky and Chris came up but am told they had short shrift, in the clubs, for the coppers were well in with the club scene and were clued up by certain club owners.
Nicky and Chris got lifted in Brum for their involvement, with the Krays, in the murder of Jack "The Hat" Mcvitie.  They finally got life sentences as did the Krays, as we all know.

Bannion,

I think you are quite right, obviously it was not the Krays themselves. I just remember reading an interview Eddie Fewtell gave when he released his book. He tells how he saw three of the Krays gang off on his own, by jumping up on to a table with a pint pot in his hand and laying all three out with it.

His minder was laid flat at the first punch by one of the Kray mob who had been sent to muscle in on the Birmingham Club scene. According to the interview he nearly killed the three and when the police were called and the ambulances took the injured away. No questions were asked and no charges were brought.

Ah well it all helps to sell the book.
