Holdens, Simpkiss and Batham all Black Country Ales. Mouthwateringly tasty!
But Hook Norton a great beer! Or used to be. I think a lot of great beers have diminished in their flavour and strength over the years. Examples: Youngs of Wandsworth, Courage Directors, Bass. I think Fullers ESB of Chiswick is still a good one though overpriced.
Many local brews change from month to month and therefore are not memorable although strong tasting.

Marstons Pedigree isn't too bad either, but perhaps not as good as it used to be.

Could I just point out this thread is entitled "the old pubs of Brum" and not the beers of Brum. If you want such a thread then please start one and I'll transfer some of these posts over.
Phil died in 2020. RIP.

I was drinking in the ''Old Contemptibles'' last week with some old school friends.Very good selection of beer's and ales.Service was very good, and the bar very clean.Only drawback was the toilets were upstairs, not very handy four five doddery old men,but as luck had it one of the crew has a walking stick, which we used to limp to the downstairs disabled w.c.A testament to the quality of the beers was we arrived at 1230hrs. and left at 2030hrs.A good day was had by ''The Last of the Saltley Wine''.
