Taste is the main criteria when supping beer and it is true that since the rise of CAMRA, drinkers have become more discerning. But this doesn't mean that beer has to knock your socks off. The best tasting beers from around Birmingham in the mid seventies as I remember were the handpumped milds. Davenports and Bathams in particular.

I started off on mild at first , then went on to bitter been on it ever since . Had a pint of Kingpin in Rex Williams(casino) in the 60's
it tasted a lot better than Ansells or M&B at the time , Brew X1 was my main drink till it became extinct in some of the pubs in the 90's
then I came across it in The Bell in the noughties . All to no avail they had changed it to a smoothflow version(why oh why), anyway
if the pub you were in didn't do real ale you were stuck with crap like Tetleys or John Smiths ,. I'm sure there are better bitters around than these for drinkers who don't like the real ale

Yes it was on a hand pump. Being a freehouse we had five different brewery beers on the bar and Welsh brewers M&Bs was the bigest sales.

It wasn't in Brum. It was our business move to Pembrokeshire it also had accommodation and two bars. It was a very good move and I am staying here           I don't own it now sold it back in 1989.

Ian in my experience the name changing of a pub generally means it will close down within six months.

Let's test this theory.

Just before Christmas the Hillyfields pub on Quinton Road was refurbished & re-opened as the Copper Fox.  I shall keep an eye on it on my homeward commutes

Two good pubs, I've used both, I used to go to a country & western night at the Red Lion Kings Heath on the 70's it was always a good night with some good bands.

I used to go & see bands at the Red Lion Knowle in the '80's.  I'd get the last bus to Solihull afterwards & then have to walk the rest of the way home from Solihull as the buses to by where I lived would stop about 10pm!

I think the Copper Fox is now an Indian Restaurant . Used to be traditional Marstons pub. Shame

Surely my theory has already been proven with this pub, didn't it undergo a name change already and then close down before these recent renovations.


I hope I have got the right pub, as it's one I've never used.

Judith I didn't like my comparrison photos so I did a check and yes I have got Quinton Lane and Quinton Road mixed up so they are two different pubs, I can only apologise. I'll excuse myself by saying that it's not my end of town and I've never used either pub, though I should have realised as I often use Quinton Lane as a short cut.
