Judith

Surely my theory has already been proven with this pub, didn't it undergo a name change already and then close down before these recent renovations.

I hope I have got the right pub, as it's one I've never used.

Phil we had a partial family get together here my sister RIP lived locally and her kids , my brood . Plus my brother in laws brothers wife and her kids . My mother RIP is buried not far away from here .

The Hillyfields didn't close down as such before the change of name mind you.  It looked busy & popular right up until it closed for what I thought was just going to be refurbishment, when it opened a couple of weeks later it had a new name and branding (it's a bar & grill now), and looks rather devoid of clientele when I go past.  I've never been in there mind you, I just go past it on the bus en route to Northfield on the way home from work.

My grandfather was the landlord at the lion and lamb pub on corner of Highgate Road and Stoney Lane in Sparkbrook (1938-1940). Iím trying to find out all I can about it. I read on a post that it was demolished, does anyone know when that was, or why the address no longer appeared in Kellyís Directories from1941? Many Thanks!

Hi Michelle

Welcome to the forum, I knew the Lion & Lamb and I believe it is still standing today (though no longer a pub) It may have closed in 1941 possibly due to bomb damage but by 1943 it was back in the directory's as it was every year until the directory's stopped being published in mid 70's.

I never used the pub myself but I think it was still open in the 80's though I lived nearby until the 70's and the only thing I ever heard about the pub was that the cellars had a problem with flooding every time it rained.

A couple more photos of the Lion & Lamb that look like the b&w one is from some time in the 40's and the colour one is from the 60's. In the 60's photo the pub has been extended, perhaps this explains it's closure for a while in 1941?
