Hello MikeM i am not sure of the date the Adelaide closed but we were one of the last families to move out 8th August 1968 the second photo is the other side of Erskine street looking down the hill you can just see the entrance of Spooner St on the left hand side. St James st is behind the photographer there is a photo of Dades shop which was on the the corner of Vauxhall Rd and St James St but i cannot find it sadly thats the only one I have ever seen I knew the street well as one of my mates lived there. Hello everyone. I was interested to see the photos of the Adelaide and Dades shop. I lived at 146 Vauxhall Rd, with my Grandad, mom, dad, and aunt, his name was Charlie Strong,he kept a few pigs at a place which was down by the lamp pub, the park was behind it. Our house was on the opposite side of the road from the Adelaide, opposite the gates of the presbytery. I delivered papers for Charlie Butler my round was Erskine St and Inkerman St. My mate did Dollman St. and Alma Cresent, we still see each other every week, and must admit we thought it was Oak terrace or Oak cottages Great to see photos and read about  the area were I grew up.

Hello Rog welcome mate nice to see we have a Vauxhall Rd man on, you were down by Vauxhall Grove then ?? did you go to St Vincents ? I was in the seniors from 1955- 58 you must recall the horses under the Viaducts how about the little front room chip shop in St James St and the Outdoor on the corner of Willis St I think Mr Rose ran it no messing about in his shop he would soon sling you out if you tried it on.I can,t say i remember any one keeping pigs though what year would that be??Dek

Hi Rog

Welcome to the forum, when was this I remember them clearing those houses along Vauxhall Rd and I can remember doing some courting there when they turned it into parkland all around what used to be St James's before they built the school. These few photos will be familiar to you.

Thanks for the welcome I lived there from 1948 till 1958 grandad lived there till he died in early 1960. I went to Windsor St. school as did my father in law funnily enough, he is now 86, when he went, it was a senior school as well. He lived in Chichely St. from 1927 till 1940. Yes I remember the chippy as I walked up St James St to get to school.Grandads pig yard was roughly were the garage is now

Thse photo's were taken sometime between 1937 and 1940. My 2 uncles worked on gasometers in Brum and around the midlands. My cousin gave me these on Wednesday and I'd not seen them before, neither of us know where they were taken.
    Any ideas anyone?

Hey Steve,

Great photos, have you got no history with them at all? I would love to know where that first one was taken from. The one looking down at the part completed gasometer. It has obviously changed so much in 80 years or so that it is so hard to work out. It must have been taken from the top of another gasometer, but what is that high grassy bank just below.

Would it be Saltley gas works i used to collect gas van from there and it looks familiar, more so from the outer wall of the compound.

The first photo could be taken from the top of Nechells Place and the Railway bridge at the back could be Saltley Viaduct. Dek

Phil, I suspect the construction job photo is an aerial one.  My Uncles were Brummies and were bought up in St Saviours Rd, Saltley, across from the Vicarage, so although Nechells and Saltley were their main workplaces they also were sent here and there.
Wonder if MJ has a record of where a gasometer was being built just before the war?
