Look at the houses down below in the second photo, they look brand new as if they are just setting the roads out. It looks more like the top end of Aston Church rd to me, somewhere like Warren Rd.

I,ve been studying photo 1 I,m not so sure this is Saltley now as i can see no sign of the canal or the river Rea in the picture. Dek

Dek, Bit of a mystery we have, maybe Phil has a line on it there being a man of great acumen. O0

No prizes for guessing when this photo was taken, but where was it? It's not St Saviours road, or Ash Road. Has to be somewhere around Saltley way, it was among my Uncles stuff with the gasworks photo's.

Steve,

Another good photo, it looks like it was taken yesterday. It could have been taken anywhere in Birmingham, but as you say it's a family photo and must have been taken in Saltley. I will admit I haven't a clue where.

Hi Steve  -  Re :-post 1271 it looks like Avenue Road, with the BRS depot on the left at the top,and Windsor Street Gasometer in the background.

Hey Blane, I think you could be right there, I brought up Windsor St on Google Earth and I can see a bridge on the photo which seems to match to Aston bridge on Aston Rd.
There are three gas holders on the site now, so if it's the right place another gas holder would have been added, they are very close together. There's a building between the two gas holders in the photo, but it's not there in G'Earth. However there is a new, lower building and some evidence of old foundations.

There have been three gasholders on the site since at least 1890, as seen on the 1917 map below. It is similar but i don't think it is windsor st

Hello - I'm new to this forum. I am interested in the Nechells & Duddeston areas etc. I was born in Melvina Road flats and our family lived there until 1971/2. I went St Annes School, Cato Street and then onto Duddeston Manor (Bilateral) school. I had many friends who lived "over the mill", i.e. Cato St and Devon St area. I remember the Rocket, Tom Thumb, Eagle, Foaming Tankard, Ashted Hamlet. Loved the photos, we used to call the lady statue "the floozy in the jacuzzi". Bill Boucher is my brother in law and I have passed the address of this site to him. Mick2e is also my brother in law - you can take the girl out of Nechells but.....................

we lived in Kellet rd  I remember the smell of the gas works used to make me vomit every morning on the way to school I had to wear a scarf over my mouth and nose even in the summer. I think we went to a school called Cromwell street, would this be right ?

Thanks for that MJ, I've no idea how to find out where that shot was taken.  I know the pics of my Uncles would be before 1940 as they were both in the TA and their units were moved into the regular army.  The youngest, Harold was born 1923 and would have left school at 14 or 15 so 1937 at the earliest. He went MIA in 1943. However, the gasworks pic and the uncles pics are from the same roll of film as they are the same size and all have the same number stamped on the back "23-16"
