Hi Karl,

First let me welcome you to the forum, I'm also sure what pudding says is true, as I have been asked this question before. It might even have been on this forum, the only pub on Johnson St / Trevor St was in fact the Albion. I'm sure another member confirmed that it was known as "the Empty".

So if you remember the pub at all perhaps you might be able to confirm it was the one in this photo.

So Karl,

Why was it given the name the "Empty", was it because a shortage of customers?

Can anybody put a name or location to this shop, all I can tell you is that is in Birmingham and it says that it is Vauxhall Rd. I picked it up while trawling the net the other day and I knew I hadn't got any idea where it was. It is obviously just after the turn of the last century and could be c1910. It is also obviously a wines and spirits shop, but you can just make out an advert for Colmans Mustard so there is a possibility that they sold groceries as well.

I have looked through Kelly's trade directory's for 1903 & 1913 but can find no match, anybody have an idea. It is of no great importance but it would be nice to find out.

I don't know were it is but the shop front is a model shop front that the councils in some part are keeping that way, we have one town down here Narberth and all the shop fronts are like that and it is a busy shoping town.

Hello Phil this one is not one I remember but there are a few option
1 There were 3 empty shops one was a Pawn Shop for a bit next to Dades
2 There was a shop next to the old Lamp Tavern
3 A few months ago a young girl came on to B.H.F.and asked if anyone could remember her great grand mothers shop down by Lawford St
The other option is up next to the Corn Shop corner of Newdigate St I seem to think there was another empty building next door and then there was the new frontage of Guys
Not much help really but it,s ideas.Dek

Dek

It was probably demolished and cleared before either of us were born, it could well have been where the park or the Co op Dairy was. I didn't really expect anyone to know, because I don't think we have anyone on the forum old enough to remember it. I thought someone like a guest on the forum might look in and have some idea.

Hi Phil

it's a pity you can't make out the name over the door or the number of the shop. but does it say 1915 on the sash in the window? if so then it may be in a later Kelly's book?

This is another photo my cousin found in her Dad's old cigar box. I vaguely recall the decor, but have no idea where it was. Uncle George played Darts, and Dominoes mainly in the Prince of Wales teams. (The pub on Thimble Mill Lane). My Uncle, George Skinner is to rhe right of the lovely young lady, his arm obscured by the cup.
