What was Kelseys beer like and where was it brewed?

According to Wiki, Benjamin Kelsey Ltd was founded in 1859, offices and brewery in Ashted Row. They merged with Thornley Ltd of Leamington Spa in 1933 to form Thornton Kelsey Ltd. I can't report on the quality of the beer

Most of the pubs were taken over by Davenports.

According to Kelly's trade directory Kelsey's brewery was part of the Ashted Tavern pub on the corner of Henry Street and Ashted Row. This photo of the pub was taken in 1960, which must have been shortly before it closed because by 1961 it was no longer listed.

I bet some of those small independent breweries produced some great beer. Possibly not so good in other cases. Before my time, but it must have been a golden age compared to the 70s and 80s when we had to tolerate and survive those dreadful, mass produced keg beers and lagers. The occasional pint of Banks's or Batham's was a rare treat. The Real Ale revolution came after I left Brum.

Back in the early 1900's (and before) most pubs and beer houses  brewed their own beer. Most of the breweries today started from these sources.

Phil, sorry to disagree but 'most of the breweries today' are small independent breweries set up by young entrepreneurs much like in the old days. The large conglomerates bear no similarity to the breweries they took over except perhaps in name.

But the large conglomerated breweries did start from little breweries, no matter how big they became.

Thanks Mike that's another lovely old pub gone, think I must walk round with blinkers on. I was in town Monday and I thought, have a pint in Peaky Blinders doesn't open Mondays, so then I thought the Costermonger that doesn't open Mondays either, last go Yates, glad I hadn't come miles to see the old locals.
