Roads around The Flat - Carter's heaven. The Flat was surrounded by hills some sloping down to it, others sloping up. If you had the knowledge to fit brakes to your cart The Flat was your oyster as basicly all the hills were available to you: Key Hill, Heaton St, Icknield St, high end of Lodge Rd, to the west, and the mighty Pitsford St. If you weren't able to make a controlled decent your options were far more limited to: Heaton St (but not without risk - check out the 1956 Heaton St Go-cart crash on the Heaton Street thread) and Icknield St, or another option was to make a partial decent on one of the steeper hills. Without brakes Key Hill was only for the very brave or the very foolish and Pitsford St was suicidal..........
