My future wife's AuntyBetty Overy had the fish& chip shop for many years on the Flat on the cross road by Ford St.
The Flat Chippy - Hi Ed, I have to confess to not knowing the chippy you refer to, obviously a gap in my education, my parents always used the chippy on Key Hill (about half way up on the Norton's side) but it does appear the other chippy was closer to where I lived in Heaton St., I can imagine they enjoyed an upsurge in trade when the Key Hill Chippy increased its price for a bag of chips from 4.1/2d to 6d.
Was it near to The Abbey Vaults pub?

Hockley Pentecostal Church - I have a family connection with Judith wife of Miles Witherford, former long standing Pastor, now retired but I've no doubt still active. Judith gave me a bible when I was aged 5 and living in Heaton St - that was 64 years ago, my mother kept it and I retrieved it from her possessions when she died some years ago. I found a leaflet therein, I have no strong religious beliefs but reproduce it here for the sake of posterity.

Wot no...? The Flat met our everyday needs in the 50's but sometimes you needed to go further afield....

Roads around The Flat - Carter's heaven. The Flat was surrounded by hills some sloping down to it, others sloping up. If you had the knowledge to fit brakes to your cart The Flat was your oyster as basicly all the hills were available to you: Key Hill, Heaton St, Icknield St, high end of Lodge Rd, to the west, and the mighty Pitsford St. If you weren't able to make a controlled decent your options were far more limited to: Heaton St (but not without risk - check out the 1956 Heaton St Go-cart crash on the Heaton Street thread) and Icknield St, or another option was to make a partial decent on one of the steeper hills. Without brakes Key Hill was only for the very brave or the very foolish and Pitsford St was suicidal..........

I had a number of relatives living around the Flat in the 50s - needless to say we were all blessed with the same gift!

Cycle shops - We were fortunate enough to have 2 cycle dealers on The Flat in the 50's (Woolworth's also sold cycle accessories) my mother bought me a trike from Centric Cycles (Icknield St end), the other shop was Sport and Play (Ford St end). As the bike got older it suffered from a loose chain, the proprietor at Sport and Play adjusted it for me on a number of occasions without charge, even though he must have known the bike hadn't been purchased from his.
