I've lightened the photo and enlarged it a little so I can see it better. I think it is the Saltley Picture Palace that was just at the bottom of Alum Rock Rd. In my photo there has been some slight remodelling and performances have been cut from 3 a day down to two 7 & 9 instead of 3 7 & 9, but the prices remain the same.

Smashing photo though.

Phil, could it be Nechells theatre or early picture house? if you look closely at the pic it say's Nec on the lefthand side of the photo. is there any thing in the old Kelly's Directory? of that time. I wonder if member Mikejee can come up with something?

Have looked at Kellys and can't find any listing in the years I looked at for "Nechells..." which is a theatre. Surprisingly, there doesn't seem to be a listing section for theatres then ib the trades section.

Phil, thank you for the info on The Nechells Picture Palace. looks like it was Nechells first and only picture house maybe it was an old time theater before then is there any street map or plan with it on that you know of?. as we are on about picture house in Nechells this photo is inside old Nehells Hall about to show films for the kids I think its taken early 1950's a little bit before I got the chance to get around on my own (hey Phil is that you getting a ticking off the minister for opening emergency exit doors?)

Mike

I found it in the 1913 edition at 307a Bloomsbury St which later disappeared so perhaps it didn't last very long. These are the premises in 1966 centre position on the photo. The photo is from Carl Chinns Birmingham Lives archive.

Pudding, what a great picture of the old Nechells Hall, I would like to bet that I am in that crowd of children, probably taken late 1940s early 1950s, I went every Sunday to Sunday School, and we loved dressing up for the harvest festival, I still have the hymn book awarded to me for good attendance, presented to me by the Sunday School teacher, Miss Eileen Furnace, The last time I was in Nechells Hall, was a few years back, I attended the funeral service of Mrs Floss Griffiths, who's husband owned the butchers shop, that was next to Bullivants drapery store, such happy times.
