Phil
I thought the picture had the appearence of a wartime photo, so looked at 1944 Kellys. This confused matters a bit by saying no 106 was the Salvation army, and i knew the corner was 108. However this was just a missprint. the corner building was then the Salvation Army Officers quarters (I rather liked the idea of them living in ann ex-pub. )
Can't find the name, but the censuses for 1871,1881,1891 & 1900 all list occupant  as  retsil brewers, publican or beerhouse keeper, It changed to a grocer between 1900 & 1903, and after the First War was Silk's coffee Rooms. It looks like the cofee rooms moved into just part of the building and thesalvation army took over part just before WW2

Well Mike as usual well done, i can add a little bit of photographic evidence here. This is what looks like a mid 50's photo of Silks Cafe when it looks like he took over the whole building after a little remodelling to the frontage.

I know from memory that the cafe later moved to the corner of Great Lister St and Henry St.

Phil, We have a problem the original photo that you posted of the Salvation Army premises on the corner of Henry st and colman st is one storey high the second photo shows two storeys high?

Yes you are right, but there is no doubt about the address of Silks Café on the corner of Coleman St Henry St as the nameplates of both streets  are in plain view. As I have said by the time I moved in to Nechells Silks had moved down to the corner of Great Lister St and Henry St.

I suppose it could mean that Silks started off across the road where the Salvation Army hostel must have been and later moved to a new position on the other side of the road that is shown in the photo, but even this second photo does not look quite right even if it has the right amount of floors. It certainly is not the third photo, it looks like he moved around a lot with his Café, he might as well have had a caravan.

Phil,Mike, it looks like the probability of mix up corners especially if its on across road of the same names and the reliability of the so called professionals relating to books including Kelly's

I have been looking at Puds posting of the Nechells pubs one I couldn,t see was The Shepherd And Shepherdess on the corner of Henry St and Heneage St(Please excuse me if I missed It).But I am more interested in a pub which I don,t remember and may be in my imagination I am sure I recall reading about it at some time. All I can give you is the location. It was on Lawley St down from the White House on the same side of the road but before the Vauxhall Viaduct anybody remember it. I remember drinking in a pub which was immediately adjacent to the viaduct, diagonally across from the end of Landor St; tho' I don't recall the name.

In our time the only pubs in Lawley St were the Swan with two Necks, The White Tower, The Viaduct & The Midland. None of them were in the location you name. I used to get up and down Lawley St quite often and I cannot think of another pub there. Well not in our lifetime anyway.
