According to Linda & Anthony Chew's book, "The coop in Birmingham" , there were severla no 1 branches, as , as one closed , another was given the title. It also states that no 2 branch (presumably the first no 2)   on corner 104 coventry rd & Herbert St

I agree with Mike, if you tried to sort the order of Co op shops by photos alone you would go mental. I have the same book as Mike and from it this is another No 3 Branch in Cheetham rd this time.

Phil have you any knowledge of when the Dairy was built I would imagine a site that big would take a couple of years, it may help to give an approx.date that demolition of the original buildings took place.Dek

I don't think the shop on Great Francis St was specifically built for the Co op. I think they moved in to a small shop at 14 Great Francis St 1881 (down by the Billiard Hall I think). By 1884 they had outgrown it and relocated to the corner of Newdegate St. They added and extended the premises over the years.

Hi all, mike thank you for looking up the number 3 branch which as you say was on the corner of coventry rd and Herbert rd this would make sense to me as it is in Bordesley, I had an idea it be a close neighborhood distinct to Duddeston/Nechells

Phil I go mental!!, the wife thinks I am already so she keeps telling me!!

anyway where is or was Cheetham rd? as you know where I come from there is a street of the same name

sorry for the late reply had to go Bl**dy shopping

I am wondering if my memory is still correct in saying that the Nechells Park rd branch had a cash and change fly by wire cash system? as I was very young when I seen this, it may have been else where perhaps member gibson can help on this one? as I am sure she has used the shop more times than I have

Sorry mate is just silly me putting blind faith in the written word again. It's obviously meant to mean Cheatham St Nechells.  I have no idea about the Nechells Park Rd shop as I never as much as entered it.

Pudding, you are right in saying that the Co Op in Nechells Park Road, had a fly by wire cash system,  As did Lathams drapery store, on Nechells Green, I used to stand and watch the lady in the box, put the change in, and send it down the wire, happy memories  ;)

Can anyone remember if the shop at Great Francis Street was ever taken over by anyone else before it closed down. I seem to have a hazy recollection of going in there to buy some underwear in the mid 60's.

All I can remember is how old fashioned the shop was with little drawers full of different articles of clothing and one of those sliding ladders to access the different drawers.

What do the numbers '311', on either side of the branch number, refer to?
There's no B/S on Planet Malc.

That No 2 branch was the second No 2 Branch at 311 Coventry Rd Small Heath, confusing wasn't it?
