Thanks so much Mike (jee) for your brilliant reply!  Ancestry doesn't have those 2 particular Directories you've quoted from, so the extra info is really great to have.

The Brassworks at 87 isn't the Saunders one (checked in '71 Census)... but knowing that's where number 87 is means you can work back to 75 on the corner opposite the Adelaide Arms.  This is 'as per' the Census, so my thinking is that 76 is the next pair of 'blocks' on the plan (In the photo, a house and yard entrance/single storey store) and 77 is the next block you've shown as 76.... the 'big' house in the photo, which apparently became the conservative club. (Not my allegience I have to say!!).  The rear gardens suggest the block you've divided to create 77 is really one complete house... number 78, and the numbers then run on perfectly up to 87.

Whatever the case, I do so appreciate you taking the trouble to reply.  Thanks again Mike
Alan

I'm not sure i would agree with you Alan, as that would mean that, for some reason, the numbering went 72 (adelaide Arms, number confirmed in directory) then erskine St, then 75. I don't think that would be very likely. My identification attempted to correlate the known 87 and 72 with the buildings shown on the map . The map is mid 1880s and the the building i put as no containing 77 is wider than most of the plots and might well have , in that earlier time, have been two plots. I doubt if we will everknow for certain though.
