I have you now Bigalfats, it must have been a bit of a culture shock moving from Lupin Street to Brays Rd. It seemed you moved out of Nechells as I moved in.

Hi Phil it was,but don't worry my idiot of a father moved us back to Lupin street in 54 we stayed until 1958 and we then moved out to Glebe Farm, Tanfield Road, just before they started to demolish the area. From there I got Married in 1964 and moved to Villa Cross (quite scary for a Bluenose). Then moved to Daventry in 1968,have since retired but still season ticket holder with my wife down the Blues.

Hi Mike... I wish there was a map showing the junction of Vauxhall Road with Erskine Street in 1868 to go with Directory published then... to explain why it name's Erskine Street as Adelaide Street (next to the Adelaide Arms)!  Methinks something's gone on at that junction that involved the loss of two property numbers, namely 73 and 74. In another photo of the junction I've come across, the side (garden) wall of the corner building (which I think is number 75) doesn't look like an original wall facing a street, while the low garden wall at the front shows signs of it being changed to form a curve at the (I think new) corner.

In addition to not being mentioned in the 1868 Directory, neither 73 nor 74 are included in the 1871 Census (and not mentioned as being empty), and they're missing, too, from the 1861 Census... so this is why I feel it's number 75 is on the opposite corner to the Adelaide Arms.

The other thing is, it's Henry Saunders who would have had the larger house (77) as he's an employer (of 59 people!) as well as the father of Benjamin (his manager?) next door at 76... who had only just got married and most likely to be live in the smaller of the two houses.

As you say, I'll probably never know for certain... and that's really why I was hoping to find an address for the conservative club... and that it was indeed 77!!!

Best wishes
Alan

Me again Mike, and guess what?!  I've found the address of the Conservative club in the 1891 Census, and it was 77 after all!  Once again, 73 and 74 are missing, so the corner building is 75 while the Adelaide Arms is again 72.

I've not been able to work out how to send a personal message, but I'd like to ask Phil whether it would be possible for me to get a higher resolution copy of the photo you posted in reply 1526 page 139... as I'd love to be able to produce a print of it... now that I know the two houses at the front are where my great great and great grandfathers lived in 1871.
Hope this is an OK request
Very best wishes
Alan

You will not be able to use the messaging system until you have made at least 25 posts. Concerning the photo you could try approaching Tempus Publishing as the photo appears on page 66 of their book Saltley Duddeston & Nechells by Maria Twist.

I think you may be right, though find the absence of 73.74 peculiar, and have some difficulty in correlating the line of the buildings in the conservative club photo with the c 1889 map. incidently i have the map also marked as dated 1895 from another source.
In response to Alanjc, I have seen the phot before, and it is always very unclear. I suspect there is no good quality version around

Thanks for the explanation Phil... and for the 'link' which I'll certainly try and follow up.

... and cheers Mike for all your help. Very much appreciated.

Just for the record, in case anyone's interested (and to build up my posts so I can send pm's!), on a map of Brum dated 1868 (which I downloaded some time ago... and I forget where from) Erskine Street was actually called Adelaide Street.

Does anybody know why it was changed from Adelaide Street to Erskine St?
